Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Bob Huggins

On the team’s energy...

“I worked them pretty hard for two days. They may not have had legs. Cartier (Martin) finally made some shots after I let him sit over there for a while. We probably didn’t have as fresh of legs as we needed to have.”

On why he sat four of the starters early...

“We didn’t run down the floor. Blake (Young) stole it, went down and missed the shot, and we had not one of the other guys on that side of the floor. We’re going to play hard. We may miss shots and do any of that other stuff, but we’re going to play hard.”

On the effort ...

“Lance (Harris) was giving us a decent effort everyday. I think in the last couple of days Lance has probably had better practices than anybody has. He and Blake were probably the two best in practice, and I think there’s a correlation.”

On the play of Blake Young...

“He is the only guy that I can remember that has picked up a loose ball. He’s our best on-the-ball defender. He hasn’t made any shots, but tell me somebody who has. So, if he’s going to get the loose balls, make rotations I think he had four defensive rebounds, which is one more than two of our other starters combined that’s kind of what I saw.”

On shooting against the zone defense...

“When you pass it and have step-in shots, that’s how everybody learns to shoot. When somebody is under the basketball and throws it to you, you step into it. You’ve been shooting those shots since you started playing basketball. You ought to be able to make those. The other ones are hard curling off a screen and flaring off a screen, those are hard. Step-in shots are generally pretty easy to make.”

On playing at California...

“I’d just assume play about five of them in a row at home. If we’re going to be legitimately what we want to be, then you have to play those people and you have to figure out ways to win. Cal is good. They’ve got a lot of good players. (Cal Head Coach) Ben (Braun) a good coach I’ve know him for years. He’s a good head coach. We’re going to have to play a whole lot better.”

On transition baskets...

“We finally got some transition baskets. We really tried work for two days on getting some easy baskets because we haven’t, until today, gotten an easy basket. That’s our shooting percentage. We worked real hard on it early, then we really didn’t emphasize transition, but we really tried to work on it for two days. Lance did a good job getting out and running, and Blake started pushing the ball a lot better. That’s something we ought to be able to do. As small as we are, we ought to be able to run. Of course, as small as we are, we ought to be able to make some shots too.”
