K-State Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement ...
“I think this is a team that really takes to heart the things that we don’t do well and brings them to practice the next day. We are committed to working hard on things where we have fallen short. I thought we had a good week at practice and it’s that toughness that we needed in a game like today. UTEP got in a good rhythm off the dribble and did a great job at getting to the rim. We began to switch defenses, I felt good overall about the improvement that we made over the past week. I said to someone that we lost three games but it didn’t really feel like that because I thought our team showed improvement in each of those contests. We still saw a little spurt from our team today where the other personality jumped up and got us. We were a little passive in the beginning of the second half and that almost bit us. We’ve got to learn to be a little more consistent and we’ll learn from this game.”

On K-State’s start in the second half...
“I think I should have called a timeout sooner, I let us play through too many minutes of adjustments that we needed to make on the defensive end. Then it was carrying over offensively; we were timid offensively. They started to get a little bit of confidence and made a couple of very tough shots. I think Natasha Lacy is stone cold, she has a great three, great range, and she’s very strong and physical. They did shoot it well and getting to the rim afterwards. I think a quicker timeout would have given our team more of an opportunity to get their feet on the ground.  It snowballed for a while but that is what’s impressive about our team. We had to play after emotionally giving up that lead; and we did. We dug in and found a way to climb back into it. And ultimately take the lead. That’s competing in a game, and we’re going to be in a lot of games like this. We are going to be in a lot of close games where the score goes both ways. I am really proud of the toughness we showed down the stretch.”

Sophomore Forward Ashley Sweat

On K-Stat’s start in the second half...

“My teammates helped me out with my slow start. They can pick me up after something like that happens. We struggled but I think it showed a great step for us to not let it get to us. I think last year we would have all put our heads down and not really have tried to fight our way back. We got down and we didn’t get nervous. We played with confidence and we kept playing through it and that’s what pulled us through it.”

Senior Guard Kimberly Dietz

On winning the tournament...
“Winning this tournament is always a great thing for us, it gives us so much confidence going into all the rest of our games. Just being here playing in front of our home crowd is amazing. We all love playing at home, it’s our court. We are here to win, and hopefully we keep winning and playing hard.”

On building momentum throughout the season...

“It definitely gives us momentum. Our team plays with so much heart; no matter what hits us we keep going. This week in practice we’ve been working so hard and doing our best. I think tonight carried over into the game.”
