Fort Hays State Quotes

Fort Hays State Head Coach Mark Johnson

On tonight's performance ...
"We came into the game thinking we could play with them. The main thing was to try to hang around for most of the game to give us a chance and I think we did that. We made some big plays and hit some big shots. I am really proud of our guys. I thought we played to the end. The main thing was that we did not want to get bullied off the floor. We wanted to match their toughness and for the most part I think we did a good job. I felt that we held our own on the glass as well as we could have. "

On what he thought his team did well...
"I think we made shots when we had to. The free throw line is our Achilles' heel and it was again tonight and you have to make free throws if you are going to have a chance. We feel like we are a lot better team than when we played Kansas. That was our very first game right out of the block and it was the first game ever for six of our players. We definitely feel like we have improved and this game tonight will definitely help us. It is hard to get good ball movement against K-State. We had to make a lot more one on one plays than we wanted to but I felt like some guys stepped up and did some great things."

On Willie Hassell's performance...
"Willie has been sick so he has not got a lot of time on the floor and he had a death in the family so that has been rough on him as well. He is a good player and he showed us that tonight. His five points per game before tonight does not show what he is really capable of. I think he played a great game. He really took the challenge of the pressure that K-State was bringing at us and he made plays time and time again for us."

Forward Tim Peinter
On the team improving...
"Everyone is coming together. Our defense is getting better and our offense is starting to click. Their (K-State) style of defense really kind of threw us, but towards the end of the game you could really see that we started to adjust and make good reads. It is fun to see this team come together. It is my last go around so I do not really have any other choice but to get everyone on the same page and get going."

On starting conference play Saturday...
"Our conference is intense every game from top to bottom. Anyone could beat anyone from top to bottom on a given night. Nebraska-Omaha is a tough run and gun team so it will be a good first test. It will be good to have it on the road so the new guys can see what the road environment is like. Hopefully we can be successful in the first couple games to lead into the next semester."
