Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening statement...
“I think this game was about giving our entire roster the opportunity to get some game experience. At the same time I think our core group of players, with the exception of (Kari) Kincaid, got some quality minutes to compete together. Obviously it was a mismatch when it was all said and done. The reality of this game is every possession, the five (players) on the floor looking to compete (during that possession).”

On Shalin Span and Jalana Childs...

“I thought we got real quality minutes (out of Shalin Spani), with respect to some of the plays she made and getting a little bit of game time under her belt. That, I think, was significant. Jalana Childs played a good game for us tonight as well, coming off the bench.”

On defensive presence...

“I do think, defensively, we have been very good all season and we have continued to pick up with good defensive pressure. Tonight I thought Ashley Sweat was particularly impressive defensively early in the game. Marlies Gipson, with her shot-blocking presence was very substantial very early in this game, and sent a message of dominance in the paint. (It is) something she has done consistently now for us. I though the steals and deflections that Ashley (Sweat) caused tonight were a very good indication of us getting better.”

On tomorrow night’s game against Arkansas...

Arkansas is a very athletic team. They are playing quality basketball; they have had a tough schedule and they have a young lady that was SCC Freshman of the Week. They have a player that they will bring off of their trip to the Bahamas that was on the all-tournament team. They’re agile, very athletic, they’ve got a couple new players they have plugged in that are young but they’re (difference makers). I think they will bring the size and athleticism to the floor that would remind those of us that are familiar with the Big 12 basketball, maybe a little bit of a Texas or Texas A&M type of a basketball team. We expect that they will extend the floor some and try to utilize their athleticism and defensive looks. It’s a team that’s receiving votes in USA Today Top 25, so it’s a great contest and we’re very excited to have a game of this caliber and to be hosting it at home. It feels good after competing so well on the road.”
