Kansas State Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement...
"This is the kind of win you feel really proud of the fight the whole team brought to the floor. We knew Missouri State would be aggressive and physical and mentally strong, really great competitors. They are really strong and quick to the ball and it was a great test for us. The play of Ashley Sweat, like the night before, throughout 40 minutes of play, shows her ability to have a presence and to be there in significant defensive situations is big for our basketball team. I thought she played a great game for us. We are excited about this win because it was a very gritty, hard-nosed Missouri State basketball team and we had to battle every minute to find a way to win."

On her halftime message...
"We look at areas of the game where we had been inept. We had really turned it over so much in the first half and I thought mentally we were not competing with the same level of intensity that Missouri State was. We made some adjustments defensively, we tried a couple of different looks offensively hoping we might get some early touches from our post players and that was effective. But still Missouri State made another great run and it was not until we started rebounding defensively and gave ourselves some opportunities for some confident second possessions when we really took control of the game.

On the comeback...
"I was thinking about the Arkansas game and the good things I saw from our team there and that really gave me confidence that if we went in at halftime and put it on the table for these young people specifically where we are falling short, we could comeback. We made too many mistakes that made the game harder for ourselves. Missouri State played very well, but I felt that if we eliminated our mistakes and put ourselves in a position to compete steadily that eventually we could get competitive in the game. That was the goal. As the half went on, it was just to keep fighting."

On the feeling of winning the classic as a senior...
"I just told Kari (Kincaid), 'thank God we did not lose that our senior year.' We take so much pride in hosting this tournament. Our fans were so huge in the run. Some of the plays that we made had to deal with the momentum we were getting. You can see us come together as a team and that is a huge step for us to fight like that. I am just so proud of my team for keeping our heads up and staying true to K-State basketball and fighting the whole way through."

On what this team is doing game by game to get better...
"I thinking we are making huge strides day to day. You guys only see that when it comes to competition but in practice every day we work on something different. We try to stay true the fundamentals and stay accountable. We got out rebounded today but I think we are taking huge strides in that every day. As young as this team is I think we are learning in practice every day by the different drills we do."

On hitting a big three in the closing minutes...
"The first thing that came to my mind was 'it is about time Kari.' It was probably my best shot of the game because I was not thinking and I just shot it. I was hitting ht front rim very consistently so I thought maybe if I just put a little more legs into it they will go in. Taelor (Karr) had big score right before that so a lot of it was because of momentum, especially because I am a rhythm shooter. I think I was overdue for a make and it came at a good time."
