Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening statement...

“I think we beat a great basketball team tonight and I was extremely pleased with the play of our post game. I thought we stepped up and played extremely will in the pain but, all in all I think it was a game where our players really connected well on the offensive end of the floor. We started to see some progress in respect to our basketball decisions and that is something we have been working on a great deal in the last week. I think that was the most impressive thing to me. The fact that our team played with good rhythm and made a lot of quality decisions together on the offensive end of the floor against a very quick and athletic Arkansas basketball team.”

On the improvement in the second half...

“I think we are a team that has a lot of players that begin to feel a game. Getting into the game you start to feel and recognize the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent and maybe even what you have brought to the floor as a team. Our players tend to make good adjustments and I think their accountability continues to rise. We have tough competitors with these three ladies sitting here (Lehning, Sweat and Gibson) and they are all about finding a way to win.”

On Kari Kincaid’s performance after last game’s injury...

“I thought Kari (Kincaid) was very aggressive early in the game particularly on the offensive end of the floor and that was just a welcome sight after coming off of a game where she basically didn’t play. She went to rehab after the last game and two time before the game. For her to step up and have that offensive presence that early in the game and extend their defense was very fortunate. They’re perimeter players are quick and aggressive and I thought she did a very good job against their pressure. All of our players responded well to Kincaid’s decision to play.”

On handling the pressure of Arkansas...

“I think we have seen pressure in our early games particularly against Northwestern when we really weren’t adapt at that point to handling the pressure. Tonight, against obviously great athletes, I thought we kept the pressure ,except for those last two or three minutes when things tend to change a little bit, in our control and we understood how easy it is to handle pressure with the type of players that we have. I thought that was big key to the game. We had good execution against their full-court pressure.”

On Lehning, Sweat and Gibson making the all-tournament team...

“I am sitting here with three players that will leave here with over 1000 points in their careers. Shalee (Lehning) will leave here having the career assists record. Ashley (Sweat) will leave her scoring 1000 points and when it is all said and done she will still have another year ahead of her. Malise (Gibson) will leave here scoring over 1000 points not having played her entire conference season her sophomore year and with that she will become the all-time blocked shot leader at Kansas State. That is more than Nicole Olde who was just an extraordinary talent, 6-4, phenomenal player. What else can you say? I am surrounded by three great people and players.”
