Kansas State Player Quotes

Freshman Forward Bill Walker

On K-State’s season thus far...

“So far I think that we have been playing good. We have had a couple of good battles and lost but we are a young team so we have to learn how to win. We have to grow up sometime and I think that we grew up a lot today. When closing out the game, instead of being close and losing by three which is not acceptable anymore we are going to win games. I think we grew up a lot today.”

On his techniques on offense today...

“I just took my time out there picking spots and trying to get Mike (Beasley) involved. The more that I was focusing on Mike, the easier the game is for everyone else. (California) did a good job on Mike by just digging in on him with five guys but that opened up everyone else’s game today.”

“I’m just capitalizing on the opportunities that I had out there today. I hit those first two threes and that allowed them to defend me closer and I just went around them, used my athleticism and attacked the basket.”

On the efforts of him and Beasley...

“We have to look at everyone else around us. They stepped up, too. We couldn’t have done that with one or two guys playing good. It doesn’t happen like that. You’ve seen it happen like that. It was a team effort today. If Blake (Young) wasn’t hitting those outside shots, I wouldn’t have been able to drive. It is all hand and hand.”

On today’s attendance at Bramlage Coliseum...

“Only 5,200 came? I’m happy for the 5,200 that came. They really helped us, too. It was as loud as I’ve ever heard it. True fans want to come, regardless. They did and they had a ball out there. That is what we want to see every time.”

Senior Guard Clent Stewart

On K-State’s young team...

“There is no excuse for losing, so I wouldn’t say that being too young is the reason (we have lost three games). We have to play the cards that we are dealt and we are young and some guys are going through the learning process. I’m a senior and I’m still learning. It takes a collective effort to stick together as a team to go out there and play hard. You saw today that guys go out there and play hard. That is how you are going to win basketball games, by going out there and playing every possession for 40 minutes.”

On getting his first start of the season...

“For me it is all the same. Coming off the bench or starting, I know my role and that is to run this offense. I’m here to win. As long as we get the win, that’s what I’m about.”

Senior Guard Blake Young

On if this was a big win for K-State...

“Of course it was. They were undefeated and probably would have been ranked if they beat us. This was a good win for us.”

On California double-teaming Beasley...

“It frees up everybody. They have to play two players on him, so somebody is always open. Like we said earlier in the season, we have to hit shots. As the season goes on, we have to make every open opportunity that we get. He is a great player and draws a lot of attention.”
