Kansas State Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement...
“This is a game where we’re real pleased to get a victory over Creighton. Obviously, this is a team that is very proficient at shooting the three. They’ve got a very disciplined, unique system that they bring to the floor, a little bit like Iowa State. They are just extremely confident and very well coached at what they do. I thought tonight we handled, by in large, what they brought to the floor very well. Obviously, (Chevelle) Herring had a tremendous night for them, and I think she’s a very, very fine player. She’s going to have a great next two years of her career. I think if we would have defended her better, the game would have played out just a little bit differently. Ashley (Sweat), I thought, did a tremendous job defending her on the night, once we finally made that adjustment. Another victory and another quality win against an opponent that has played a schedule that looks very much like the Big 12 conference schedule in the non-conference. I mean, it’s amazing how tough of a non-conference slate that they’ve had and they are a very good team. Very, very well coached, and I look for them to be outstanding in the Missouri Valley Conference season.”

On a slow start on the night...
“I didn’t feel as though we started the game with productive energy. Defensively, we were pretty passive. I don’t think we intended to be. I think we were trying to play hard, but we were very slow to get going defensively, and they were very aggressive. We were ineffective on the offensive end of the floor early and played with some tentativeness. It just took us a little while to really come into our own on the offensive end of the floor as a unit. That’s, again, what preseason basketball is; playing opponents you’re not accustomed to. We’re going to see a lot of defensive looks because of (Shalee) Lehning, but it took us a while to kind of get our rhythm tonight."

On K-State’s post play...
“I felt like we had an advantage there at some point in time in the game. I felt like our best basketball was just moving the ball and finding a post when opportunities arose. I felt like when we were looking for a specific option, we weren’t very good in our offense early in the game, but eventually that loosened up a little bit. We certainly had an advantage, and I thought, by in large even when you look at the stat sheet, that Marlies (Gipson) and Ashley (Sweat) were tremendous for us tonight.”

On Kari Kincaid’s long three pointer...
“We don’t really let her practice a lot in our gym. We all understand that she has that kind of range. I know I about have a heart attack any time she passes up a shot. I have that much confidence in her ability to drop those down. I didn’t feel stressed at all at the fact that she was taking a shot from that distance. As soon as it left her hand, I felt that it was a make. She really does have that kind of range in an open shot scenario. She is that kind of a three-point shooter."
