Wagner Quotes

Head Coach Mike Deane

Opening statement...

Kansas State is a solid basketball team with a lot of young guys playing big minutes. Certainly the two NBA guys are easy to discern, the rest of those young guys played well. K-State is playing very well right now and I expect they will be very formidable in this building throughout Big 12 play. This game came about through my relationship with Coach (Bob) Huggins and the fact that we have Joey Mundweiler from Olathe, Kan. We will be back here again next year and hopefully we will fair a little better and give you a better basketball game. We certainly were outplayed, the athletic differential was significant and their pressure defense really bothered us even more than I thought it might prior to the game. The credit goes to Kansas State for how well they played today. I am disappointed that we didn’t fair a little better and compete a bit more. We have got to put this game behind us very quickly. We know what it is it is a bye game for us. We have to get back and get ready for league play.”

On being intimidated by playing K-State...

“I don’t know if intimidated is the right word. I sensed in the locker room that we weren’t ready to compete at the level that we needed to in order to compete in this basketball game. We are capable of playing better basketball than we did today. Intimidated, I don’t think is the right word. But it didn’t seem that we had the right psyche going into this game to go out and to really compete against these guys. Their pressure really bothered us. We have not seen that kind of pressure so far and they forced us out of running any offense. Instead of running plays we tried to make plays and that is not a forte of ours.”

Junior Guard Joey Mundweiler

Opening statement...

“It was fun playing in front of a crowd like this. It didn’t start out the way that we wanted it to but we brought it together and made it a little more interesting for them at the end. I would have liked to play a little better as a team and put on a better performance so it wouldn’t be as embarrassing. Those guys are good and we did as much as we could to compete against them.”

On what Wagner can improve on...

“We have to come out with a lot more energy. We got down early coming out slow and that gave them the momentum they needed early and then they had all the confidence in the world to take advantage of the game and do whatever they want. We have to get in here the next few days and improve as a team. We know they were the better team coming in, and we can’t let that take any of our confidence away.”

On playing in his home state...

“Playing in a crowd like this, this is what you dream of. To finally to get the opportunity to come back home and play basketball. Unfortunately it didn’t go the way that I would have liked, but that’s basketball.”
