Kansas State Coach Quotes

Head Coach Frank Martin

On teams performance ...

“We are growing and I expect us to continue to get better. The last three days we have put in some time in the gym and shot the ball. That is the beauty of this time of the season. We talked about not having classes and the responsibilities that these kids have on a daily basis. They are kids and if they don’t do well on a test it affects their game. Right now they don’t have any other responsibility than playing basketball. I thought we played pretty well early in the game. How we defend, if you don’t have a true point guard it is going to be hard for the other team. I think going into the game the one area where we showed real, good growth we are really starting to utilize our scouting reports.”

On the defensive play...

“We really paid attention to our scouting reports and we played along our lines and at the same time we took away individual players strengths. Our guys took the scouting report and were able to go out and defend according to what we asked them to. That is a credit to the kids growing in their commitment to wanting to be a good basketball team. I watch a lot of tape, but the assistance are responsible to putting together a game plan after having a conference with me. We share ideas and those are the ones who help them (players) do their job.”

On Sutton’s growth as a player...

“He got here Dec. 26th last year. So he got here about a year ago and he had limited practice time because we were playing Wagner the 29th and we were playing in Cincinnati on the 31st and then the Big 12 hit us right across the face. Even though we had practice time it was hard because there was so much stuff in place already. It was hard for him to absorb so much stuff at the time and then right when he was really starting to play better for us and then he got hurt and we lost him for 14-16 days. When Wisconsin guarded him in the NCAA Tournament with their starting center he took that personally and I took it personally because I felt that I didn’t a good job of coaching that day because I allowed another team’s 6-foot-11 center and as coaches the more you coach you players the better feel you have for your players. So you continue to realize how to utilize their strengths and we continue to do that with Dominique (Sutton) everyday.”
