Green Leads Wildcats at Tiger Invitational

OPELIKA, Ala. – Kansas State men’s golf junior Matt Green rallied for a 2-under par finish on the back nine at the Grand National Lake Course to pace the Wildcats during Sunday’s opening round of the Tiger Invitational.

Green ended the day in a tie for 12th place with his even-par round, which featured birdies on the first hole and three consecutive on the back stretch. As a team, the Wildcats are tied for 11th place after recording a 15-over 330 with 36-holes still to play.

"We played very poorly today, there is no other way to put it,” said head coach Grant Robbins. “Matt [Green] had a solid round, but we did not get much from the rest of the lineup.”

“Fortunately, we have two more rounds left and an opportunity to bounce back. I expect our guys to respond and play well the rest of the way."

Junior Jack Rickabaugh had the second-best day among the K-State golfers, stringing together six consecutive pars on the front nine. However, Rickabaugh would bogey four holes and birdie just one to enter the clubhouse in a tie for 38th at 3-over par.

K-State’s lone senior, Kyle Weldon, fell behind to 4-over after the first nine holes. Weldon bounced back to 2-over with two holes to play, but finished out the round in a tie for 56th with a 5-over 77.

Freshman Andrew Beckler carded a 7-over par 79 - which featured 11 pars - while sophomore Oscar Spolander went out with a 6-over front nine and in with a 3-over back nine to finish at 9-over par 81.

Auburn, the tournament’s host, sits on top of the 18-team field after putting together a 3-under scorecard of 285. The Tigers were bolstered by the overall leader, Matt Gilchrest, who grabbed six birdies in his round for a 4-under 68.

The second round of the Tiger Invitational is set to begin Monday morning at 7:45 a.m. (CT). Live results can be followed on, while results will be posted at at the conclusion of the round.
