Jones Earns Nod on Doak Walker Award Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior running back Charles Jones was among 76 players in the nation and nine from the Big 12 named to the watch list for the 2016 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college running back, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday.

Jones, a product of Mandeville, Louisiana, is the first Wildcat candidate for the award since John Hubert was named to the watch list in both 2012 and 2013. Jones’ inclusion on the list marks the 14th time a Wildcat has been up for the award, including 2003 when Darren Sproles was one of three finalists and 2010 when Daniel Thomas was one of 10 semifinalists.

Jones led the Wildcats in 2015 with 696 rushing yards on 142 carries while scoring five touchdowns. He was at his best over the final seven games last season, averaging 73.7 yards after just 30.0 yards per game over the first six contests. He rushed for 75 or more yards four times, including a career high 122-yard effort at Texas.

The school’s 27th career 1,000-yard rusher, Jones enters his senior campaign ranked 21st in school history in career rushing yards, while he has 18 career rushing touchdowns to sit five shy of entering K-State’s top-10 list.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name 10 semifinalists on November 16, while three finalists will be revealed November 22. The recipient of the 2016 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 8, live on ESPN.

Kansas State will hold Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 13, at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Details for the event will be announced at a later date. Hall of Fame head coach Bill Snyder and the 2016 team captains – Dante Barnett, Jesse Ertz, Jordan Willis and Dalton Risner – will head to Dallas next Tuesday to participate in Big 12 Media Day.

Excitement is building for the 2016 K-State Football season, Snyder’s 25th year at the helm of the Wildcats, as a limited number of single-game tickets remain available for K-State’s six home games. Available tickets for the homecoming game against Texas on Saturday, October 22, are expected to be down to scattered singles soon, and the other five home games are also selling quickly as K-State looks to extend its sellout streak to 33-straight games.

To order tickets, fans can contact the K-State Athletics Ticket office online at, by phone at 1-800-221-CATS or at the main ticket office inside Bramlage Coliseum.
