Jones Named Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Akela Jones earned her second Athlete of the Week award in as many days as she was named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. 

The senior was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on Tuesday by the national track and field organization, marking the second time she has won the award this month. 

Jones fell 35 points short of the NCAA pentathlon record at last weekend’s DeLoss Dodds Invitational with 4,643 total points in the event. The record of 4,678 points was set during last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships by Georgia’s Kendell Williams. 

The St. Michael, Barbados native started the event off with first place finishes in the 60 meter hurdles (8.25) and then in high jump (1.85m/6-00.75) to bring her total score to 2,114 points through the first two events of the pentathlon. 

After earning 727 points in shot put, she dominated in long jump with a career-best leap of 6.64m/21-09.50 to earn 1,053 points to move her meet score to 3,894 points heading into the 800 meter run. She then earned 749 in the 800 meter run with a career-best time of 2:25.63 to finish the day with 4,643 points.

As the 2016 season stands, Jones is the collegiate leader in both the pentathlon and the high jump, is No. 2 in the long jump and is No. 4 in the 60-meter hurdles. Per the IAAF, she’s the world leader in the pentathlon, No. 3 in the long jump, No. 7 in the high jump and No. 16 in the 60 hurdles.

K-State returns to action this Saturday as it travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational.
