Jones Named to Preseason Bowerman Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Akela Jones was named to the 2016 Preseason Bowerman Trophy watch list, the USTFCCCA announced on Wednesday. 

With the recognition, Jones becomes the first Kansas State female track athlete to be named to Bowerman Trophy watch list since the award was established in 2009. 

Jones is coming off of an impressive 2015 indoor season, winning the Big 12 title in long jump while snagging high-point scorer of the meet honors. She was also named Big 12 Outstanding Performer of the Year, as well as the USTFCCCA Midwest Field Athlete of the Year. 

She also earned First Team All-American honors in high jump and long jump along with a Second Team All-American selection in the 60 meter hurdles. 

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday as they host the Wildcat Invitational at Ahearn Field House. Field events are set to begin at 11 a.m. followed by track events, which are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
