K-State Climbs Leaderboard in Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate


JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – Following an opening-round showing of 3-over par, the Kansas State men’s golf team was able to shave eight strokes in the second round and finds itself in ninth place with a 36-hole score of 2-under par 574 after play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Saturday.

After finishing 10 strokes over par on the last three holes in the first round, K-State put more emphasis on executing late and finished with a second-round score of 5-under par 283.

“The guys played well. The biggest difference was that we were 11 shots better today on the last three holes than yesterday,” said head coach Grant Robbins, whose Wildcats moved two spots to ninth on the leaderboard. “The conditions are perfect for scoring this week. We just need to stay with the process and keep grinding and it will pay off in the end.”

Sophomore Jeremy Gandon recorded his second-straight round of under-par golf Saturday with a 1-under 71, but he fell in the overall standings. The Charpey, France, product slipped five spots to a tie for 19th at 3-under par 141.

Sophomore Roland Massimino was able to move up one spot to a tie for 33rd with an even-par 144 thanks to a 1-under par round on Saturday. Freshman Jacob Eklund made the biggest jump for K-State, improving to a tie for 40th at 1-over par 146, which featured a team-best 2-under par 70 on Saturday. The Carbondale, Illinois, native jumped 21 spots from a tie for 61st.

Senior Matt Green is tied for 47th at 2-over par 146, while redshirt freshman Ben Fernandez is in 59th place at 4-over par 148.

The Wildcats look to improve on the leaderboard again Sunday during the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate as play begins at 8:50 a.m. Coverage of the final round from Jonesborough can be found at www.golfstat.com, while updates will be posted at www.kstatesports.com at the end of the tournament.
