K-State Concludes Fall Play in 11th at Bridgestone Golf Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following an opening day that left them in a tie for seventh, the Kansas State men’s golf team completed the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in 11th place following Monday’s final round with a 54-hole score of even-par 864 at the par-72 6,880-yard Grandover Resort Golf Course. K-State shot a 5-over par 293 to slide four spots on the leaderboard during the final 18 holes.

“It was a disappointing finish for us, especially with the way we started,” head coach Grant Robbins said, whose Wildcats featured a lineup made of all underclassman. “We have shown flashes of what we are capable of, we just have to be more consistent and we have to play with more confidence. We have a good young core, but we just have to keep pushing and keep improving and we will be much better in the spring.”

Sophomore Jeremy Gandon returned to his old ways, improving 12 spots on the leaderboard from his second-round finish where he was tied for 31st. The standout from Charpey, France, tied his opening round score of 69 and finished the tournament 4-under par 212, good enough to tie for 19th.

Freshman Ben Fernandez also saw vast improvement on the final day of the tournament, improving 11 spots to tie for 33rd by posting a 1-under par 215.

Freshman Jacob Eklund finished 2-over par in the final round and to conclude the tournament with an even-par 216 scorecard. Another freshman, Levi Valadez, saw the furthest drop of the Wildcats, finishing in a tie for 55th, 12 places from his previous standing of 43rd. He ended the tournament at 5-over par 221.

Sophomore Andrew Beckler completed his second tournament of the seasonby finishing in a tie for 64th at 10-over par 226, followed by junior Trent Evans, who carded an 80th-place finish at 17-over par 223.

Duke won the team competition with a three-hole score of 30-under par 834. Georgia State’s Nick Budd was the individual winner at 12-under par 204.

The Wildcats will resume play in the spring with in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, February 20-21, in Mobile, Alabama.
