K-State Downs Drake, Earns Second Straight Shutout

MANHATTAN, Kan -- K-State women's tennis earned its second 7-0 victory in as many days as they put away Drake on Sunday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.

With the win over Drake (5-5), the Wildcats (5-2) match their best start since 2014.

The victory also marked the first time K-State has won 7-0 in two straight duals since the 2013 campaign.

"Drake is a tough team, that never goes away, and I think we did a terrific job coming out strong and asserting our dominance from the get-go," said K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg.

K-State took the doubles point for the fourth time this season with victories by Iva Bago and Ana Garcia Navas in the No. 2 position and Sara Castellano and Palma Juhasz at No. 3.

"Doubles looked a lot better today," explained Steinberg. "Number three played their best match so far, and even though we still have a lot of work to do, we are definitely getting much better with every match."

The Wildcats started singles play with a win by freshman Millie Stretton, who took down Mela Jaglarz 6-1, 6-1 to earn her ninth straight victory.

Fellow freshman Garcia Navas competed in the No. 1 position for the second time, defeating Mariel Ante 6-1, 6-3. She has won both of her matches when playing at No. 1 singles.

Castellano and Carolina Costamagna each took care of their opponents in straight sets, defeating Summer Brills 6-2, 6-4, and Tess Herder 6-2, 6-0, respectively.

Competing in the No. 6 position, Livia Cirnu overcame a loss in the first set to beat Joely Lomas 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In the last match of the day, the Wildcats needed one last singles win to complete their second straight sweep. After taking the first set 6-2, Bago lost the second set to Maddie Johnson 6-2 before winning the third-set tie breaker 11-9.

"Overall, I am very pleased with the weekend," said Steinberg. "We have a couple of days of practice, and then we head to a very tough weekend in New York City."

Next up for K-State is a trip to the East Coast as it takes on No. 50 Columbia and Memphis at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center on February 26 and 27.
