K-State Finishes Play at Drake Jamboree

Final Results

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Wildcats wrapped up play at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center on Sunday, achieving a 6-3 singles record and 5-3 doubles record on the weekend.

Livia Cirnu, Millie Stretton and Maria Panaite each went 2-1 in singles over the three-day tournament. On the final day, Cirnu took down Illinois State's Veronika Golanova 7-5, 6-4 while Stretton beat Chanel Scudiero of Illinois State 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 to win her second straight after dropping her first match of the tournament on Friday.

Panaite lost her first singles match of the weekend, getting out-battled by Iowa State's Anna Kuuttila 1-6, 6-4, 3-6 to end her four-match winning streak.

"I think we had our ups and downs in singles and doubles over the weekend, but overall all three players did well," explained head coach Danielle Steinberg. "The matches we lost as well as the close matches we won were a mental battle more than anything, and I think it taught us coaches and the players a little more about themselves and what we need to work on more."

Playing in two doubles matches on Sunday, Panaite partnered up with Stretton to defeat Montana Crawford and Carin Runefelt of Iowa 6-4 to complete an unbeaten weekend. The first-time partners started off with three straight wins on Friday to win their flight. Panaite was also paired with Cirnu on Sunday and lost to the same Iowa duo.

"The way the tournament was set up allowed us to try different doubles combinations throughout the weekend, and we had Stretton play in two different teams," Steinberg explained. "Maria and Millie played great throughout the weekend. I think we are very close to figuring out our doubles combination for the spring, which will allow us to start working with specific teams and not just on general doubles."

Next, the Wildcats will close out the fall and send sophomore Carolina Costamagna and freshman Ana Garcia Navas to Orlando, Florida to compete in the USTA Clay Court Invitational held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex November 5-8.
