K-State Goes 7-0 on Last Day of SMU Fall Tournament

Final Results

DALLAS, Texas –
K-State women’s tennis went undefeated on the final day of the SMU Fall Tournament, earning five singles wins and two doubles victories to end the weekend with a 12-9 record. Head coach Danielle Steinberg was happy with the way her team performed.

“Today we got a little tougher as a team,” said Steinberg. “It was the third day of the tournament, and everyone had tough battles yesterday, but we all showed a high level of maturity in how we competed.”

After a tough semifinal loss Saturday, Carolina Costamagna defeated UTA’s Elizabeth Thomas 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in her second straight three-set match.

“Caro had another third-set battle, but for the first time this year, she was able to stick to the game plan and keep her focus throughout the match which is huge for her,“ explained Steinberg.

Similar to Costamagna, Livia Cirnu bounced back from a semifinal loss in her draw by defeating Dasha Sharapova of SMU 7-5, 6-3 to pick up third-place in the Red Singles. The victory was Cirnu’s third in her last fourth matches.

Millie Stretton and Maria Panaite each ended the weekend winning two straight matches, with Stretton defeating Mada Marianovic of Abilene Christian 6-4, 6-3 in the Black draw consolation final and Panaite downing Abilene Christian’s Alba Perny 6-4, 6-0 in the SMU draw consolation final.

Meanwhile, Iva Bago beat UTEP’s Matilda Tench 6-4, 6-2 in an extra match of the Blue Singles draw. This was one of two wins for Bago on the day as her and Stretton took down Erin Walker and Kaysie Harmsdorf from Abilene Christian 6-2 in the Red Doubles draw.

Also competing for K-State in doubles, Costamagna and Cirnu beat Louisiana Tech’s Alexandra Starkova and Zoe Chen 6-2 to earn their second win as doubles partners.

“Liv and Iva both bounced back from yesterday's tough losses to play great doubles and singles while Millie and Maria both continued to show great improvements in their singles game,” said Steinberg. “Overall, we definitely improved as a team this weekend.”

Bago and Costamagna will be joined by Sara Castellano and Ana Garcia Navas to compete in the ITA Central Regional Championships October 15-18 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
