K-State, Green Finish Second in Bill Ross Intercollegiate

RAYMORE, Mo. – Behind an outstanding performance from senior Matt Green, the Kansas State men’s golf team continued its strong showing on Tuesday, finishing in second place at 5-over par 869 in the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,400-yard Creekmoor Golf Club.

Green, who carded an even-par 72 in the final round, finished at 5-under par 211 to tie for second place, helping the Wildcats finish just one stroke shy of team champion Grand Canyon.
“I’m really proud of the guys and how they competed today. We had our chances, but unfortunately we came up one shot short,” said head coach Grant Robbins. “This was a good learning experience – we learned how you have to value each shot and how you can save strokes by having a positive attitude at all times.”

Green was able to continue his steady performance as the Lenexa, Kansas, native carded three birdies in the final 18 holes of play to finish one stroke behind Grand Canyon’s Jake Chanen, the tournament champion. Green earned his highest placing since winning the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in September 2014.

Although Green led the way, it was the youth that would be was key for K-State as freshman Jacob Eklund climbed the leaderboard in his first tournament of the season. Eklund finished in a tie for 10th with a 1-over par 217 thanks to a 3-under par 69 in the final round.

Sophomore Jeremy Gandon duplicated his second-round score of 2-over par 74 as he finished in 19th place with a 4-over par 220. Senior Jack Rickabaugh and freshman Ben Fernandez rounded out the team scoring as Rickabaugh carded a 6-over par 222 to tie for 23rd and Fernandez finished in a tie for 36th at 9-over par 225.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Roland Massimino scored a 1-under par 215, including a 2-under par 70 in the final round, to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place. Freshman Levi Valadez was unable to build on his performance from the first two rounds, finishing in 39th place with a score of 10-over par 226.

The Kansas State men’s golf team will return to play October 14-16, with the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
