K-State Impresses in Final Day of Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kansas State track and field team closed out the Tyson Invitational with a spark as it saw six more athletes record personal bests with one school record on Saturday.

Overall, the Wildcats saw 10 athletes record PRs over the weekend at both the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic, as well as three first-place finishes and a school record being broken in the men’s 200 meter dash.

After making the semis in Friday night’s 60 meter dash, sophomore sprinter Terrell Smith set a new school record and a personal best in the 200 meter dash invitational with a time of 20.93 to finish seventh. His previous best was 21.00, which he set earlier this season at the New Mexico Team Invitational.

K-State’s distance runners also had a strong day on the track. Sophomore Colton Donahue started the day with a first-place finish and a new personal best time of 8:20.60 in the 3000 meter run. His mark is 10th-best all-time in the 3000 meter run in school history.

In the invitational section of the 3000 meter run, junior Jeff Bachman also set a personal best with a time of 8:37.53, just two-tenths of a second faster than his previous PR of 8:37.55, which he set at last weekend’s Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.

In the field, both of the Wildcats’ women’s triple jumpers set personal bests on Saturday. Freshman Shardia Lawrence recorded a mark of 12.69m/41-07.75, tied for the seventh-best mark in school history, while senior Alyssa Kelly recorded a personal-best leap of 12.68m/41-07.25 to claim the eighth-best mark in school history.

Thrower Jayce Brack recorded a personal best throw in shot put, posting a mark of 16.27m/53-04.50, topping his previous best mark of 16.13m/52-11.00 set a the KSU-KU-WSU Showdown.

Senior Sonia Gaskin, the only Wildcat competing on Saturday at the Iowa State Classic, recorded a 15th-place finish in the women’s 800 meter run with a time of 2:09.37, just two seconds shy of her personal best.

The Wildcats return home next Friday as they host the Steve Miller Open in Ahearn Field House. The meet will be K-State’s final meet before they team heads to Ames, Iowa, to compete at the Big 12 Championships on February 26-27.
