K-State in Seventh After One Round in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After getting off to a slow start, the Kansas State women’s golf team rallied back to shoot its third-best round of the year during the first round of at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational on Monday at the par-72, 6,450-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Club. 

The Wildcats shot a 5-over par 293 and are in seventh place, five shots away from the top three. Coming off a win last week in the Greenville Regional Preview, junior Connie Jaffrey is leading the Wildcats as she is tied for ninth at 1-under par 71 to tie her lowest single round score of the year.

“The team did a nice job overall today,” said head coach Kristi Knight. “We had a few holes that held us back, but they stayed patient and kept playing. I am proud of them today. This is a solid start.”

Senior Madison Talley shot an even-par 72 in the first round and is tied for 15th, while fellow seniors Katherine Gravel-Coursel and Paige Nelson are tied for 30th at 3-over par 75. Sophomore Chloe Weir carded a 5-over par 77 and is tied for 54th. 

Mississippi State is the current leader at 4-under par 284. The Bulldogs hold a one-stroke lead over Tennessee, while Arkansas is in third place at even-par 288. The Razorbacks’ Alana Uriell is the individual leader at 7-under par 65.

The Maryb S. Kauth Invitational will resume Monday with an 8:30 a.m., start to the second round. Live results can be followed at www.golfstat.com and results will be available at www.kstatesports.com at the conclusion of play on Monday.
