K-State in Sixth after First Day of Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – The Kansas State men’s golf team sits in sixth place following the first and second rounds of the Rod Myers Invitational on Saturday held at the par-72, 7,136-yard The Duke University Club. 


The Wildcats carded a 4-over par 292 in the first round before improving their team score by three strokes with a 1-over par 289 in the second round. K-State will enter round three at 5-over par 581, just two strokes out of the top four.


“It was a solid day for us,” head coach Grant Robbins said. “We left some shots out there, but, overall, I thought we competed very well. We are in a good position going into tomorrow.”


Kyle Weldon led the Wildcats after the first round, firing three birdies en route to a 2-under par 70. The senior jumped two spots on the leaderboard in the second round to sit in a five-way tie for fifth place at 2-under par 142.


Connor Knabe carded a 1-over par 73 in both the first and second rounds to sit in a tie for 20th at 2-over par 146. Matt Green tallied six birdies through two rounds to card a 4-over par 148 and enter Sunday’s final round in a tie for 38th.


In his first appearance for the Wildcats, sophomore transfer Oscar Spolander carded a 4-over par 76 in the first round and improved his second-round score by five strokes to card a 1-under par 71. The Sweden native holds a two-round total of 3-over par 147. 


Freshman Jeremy Gandon carded a 2-over par 74 in his first tournament round as a Wildcat and has a two-round total 7-over par 151.


Duke and Penn State paced the field in the first round at 2-under par 286. Wake Forest pulled ahead in the second round, carding a 9-under-par 279 to holds a two-round total 9-under par 567.


Wake Forest’s Will Zalatoris leads after the first round at 12-under par 132. Duke’s Adam Wood is four strokes behind at 8-under par 136, while Connor Flach of Loyola-Maryland is in third at 5-under par 139.
