K-State Launches New Connectivity Network at BSFS

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Fans attending Wildcat football games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium will benefit from a new connectivity network as K-State Athletics has partnered with leading companies Boingo Wireless on a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and Aruba Networks on a new Wi-Fi network for improved wireless service.

As part of its commitment to the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12, the new improvements were in place for the 2015 season opener for South Dakota, and all preliminary testing and results brought rave reviews from the sold-out crowd, the 21st consecutive sellout at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
“Providing both DAS and WiFi enhancements at Bill Snyder Family Stadium was a key component of our strategic plan and mission as we continue to provide the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12,” said Senior Associate A.D. for External Operations Scott Garrett. “We want our fans to have the best experience possible at our ballgames, and we feel like our partnerships with Boingo and Aruba are a terrific opportunity to further improve in that area.  We also thank Danny Fronce of K-State Network and Telecom Services for playing an important leadership role in managing this installation.”

The new DAS network will ensure fast and reliable cellular coverage both inside and outside the stadium. DAS coverage will extend to both the East and West parking areas, allowing fans to share their tailgate fun pre- and post-game.

The state-of-the-art neutral host network was designed to support multiple cellular carriers, to ensure that the maximum number of K State fans can enjoy robust cellular coverage as part of their existing carrier service plans.  The network currently provides enhanced cellular coverage for Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile customers.

“The Kansas State University and Boingo teams share a commitment to providing exceptional fan experiences on game day. The new DAS network at Bill Snyder Family Stadium was built with the fan in mind and is designed to scale as fans share their game day experiences, and as K-State rolls out new fan-focused mobile offerings,” said Nick Hulse, President of Boingo Wireless.

K State and Boingo will expand their DAS partnership later this year, with the launch of a new carrier-grade DAS network at Bramlage Coliseum.

The new WiFi service at Bill Snyder Family Stadium provides fans instant access to a second screen user experience with a 10 GB connection.  More than 380 access points have been deployed throughout the stadium which equates to approximately one access point per 130 fans.

“Providing pervasive, reliable and secure Wi-Fi is a high priority for large universities like Kansas State as they try to deliver the best possible experience for fans attending sporting and entertainment events in their athletic venues,” said Christian Gilby, Director Product Marketing, Aruba Networks, an HP Company. “With our portfolio of indoor and outdoor 802.11ac Wi-Fi access points, AirWave network management and ClearPass Policy Manager, Aruba is delivering the infrastructure that allows Kansas State to meet users’ mobility needs now, while ensuring a smooth path for future growth.”

Fans can easily access the WiFi network by following four easy steps:

-    Select “BSFS_WiFi” from available wireless networks listed on your device.
-    Open your web browser (ex: Safari, Chrome, etc.).
-    Navigate to any Internet page (ex: www.kstatesports.com)
-    Complete the network authentication process by filling out your name, email address, phone, and zip code.

Fans are encouraged to connect to the network as early on game day as possible, as load times for the network authentication process may be delayed at high traffic moments such as kickoff.  Fans should only be required to provide their authentication information once per season, per device.  For assistance, fans may visit the Fan Experience gazebo located on the south concourse near sections 18 and 19.

Among other new features for fans at the stadium this season is the new FREE K-State Gameday mobile application which is available for iPhones and Android Smartphones, enabling fans to utilize the new Wi-Fi connectivity to access all sport programs, live audio, video and real-time K-State social streams. The app is the ultimate guide for fans attending K-State games and includes interactive maps, fan guides, upgrades and more.
