K-State Looks For Strong Start in 2015

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the cross country season quickly approaching, the K-State men’s and women’s cross country teams are looking to improve on last season with a strong start to the 2015 season.

The Wildcats kick off the season in Lawrence, Kansas, at the Bob Timmons Classic on Tuesday, September 1.

From there, the team will travel to the WSU J.K. Gold Classic Duals in the Wichita, Kansas, on September 5 before finishing out the month at the Cowboy Jamboree on September 26 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

“The first two meets are just opportunities to shake off the cobwebs a little bit. We are really trying to gear up for the third meet,” second-year head coach Ryun Godfrey said. “That will give us a chance to preview the Big 12 Championship course. It is nice to come out in the first couple of meets and see something that is better than it was last year.”

The final regular season meet will take place on October 16 at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Illinois.

“Usually by the end of September we are hoping to have a good foundation. At that point you are hoping the athletes are putting up some personal bests,” Godfrey said. “We get more focused on what happens at the end of September and ultimately the Big 12 Championships is what our big focus is on.”

The Big 12 Championships will be held in Stillwater on October 31. The team will then participate in the Midwest Regional Championships in Lawrence on November 13 before the NCAA Championships on November 21 in Louisville, Kentucky.

For Godfrey, one of the biggest challenges in cross country is the challenges that each new course will provide for the runners.

“One of the unique things about cross country is that things change form one meet to the next,” Godfrey said. “Each course is a little bit different.”
