K-State Opens 2016-17 Season in Wisconsin

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf team will open the 2016-2017 season playing in the Badger Invitational, Sunday through Tuesday, at the par-72 7,259-yard University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin.

The 54-hole invitational, hosted by Wisconsin, will begin play on Sunday with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. Each team will compete in threesomes playing 18 holes each day. Monday’s round also begins at 9 a.m., while Tuesday’s final round is a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

“We are excited to get this season started and are looking forward to competing in Wisconsin,” said head coach Grant Robbins, whose Wildcats are looking to get a jumpstart on the year after an off season of improvement. “The guys have prepared well, now it is a matter of going out, having fun and playing with confidence.”

K-State’s scoring lineup will consist of sophomore Jeremy Gandon, senior Matt Green, sophomore Andrew Beckler, senior Connor Knabe and junior Trent Evans. Additionally, redshirt freshman Ben Fernandez will play as an individual in his first-career competition.

Following a solid freshman season, Gandon will lead the Wildcats into competition this week. The Charpey, France, native led the team with a 72.76 stroke average last year. He finished his freshman campaign with a tie for fourth at the Big 12 Championship with a 3-under par 285. Gandon was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team, becoming the first Wildcat freshman to receive the award.

Green, having recently competed in the U.S Amateur in August, will look to finish out his K-State career on a high note in 2016-17. The Lenexa, Kansas, product was the first Wildcat to compete in the U.S. Amateur since 2012, narrowly missing the cut after stroke play.

In addition to the Wildcats, the Badger Invitational will host Butler, Drake, Illinois State, Iowa State, Marquette, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota State, Rutgers, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wofford.
