K-State Places League-High 25 on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For a second-consecutive season, Kansas State football led the conference in Academic All-Big 12 players with 25 honorees, including a conference-high 18 on the first team, as the conference office announced its list of 141 recipients Thursday afternoon.

K-State also paced the Big 12 with three players that accomplished 4.0 GPAs in defensive tackle Matt Seiwert (agribusiness), wide receiver Stanton Weber (accounting) and place kicker Dillon Wilson (communication studies), as the Wildcats had one more 4.0 player than the rest of the league combined. In fact, it marked only the second time in the previous 19-year history of the league that a program had at least three players nominated with 4.0 GPAs in a season (Nebraska, 2004).

Weber, along with place kicker Jack Cantele (civil engineering), linebacker Will Davis (accounting) and fullback Glenn Gronkowski (management and marketing), are each three-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 honorees. Cantele and Gronkowski were also named to the Academic All-District 7 team two weeks ago as both are now eligible for Academic All-America accolades.

Other first-team members included long snapper Dalton Converse (kinesiology), linebacker Colborn Couchman (finance), fullback Winston Dimel (business), offensive lineman Luke Hayes (kinesiology), quarterback Joe Hubener (secondary education), offensive lineman Matt Kleinsorge (sociology/criminology), place kicker Ian Patterson (food science and industry), wide receiver Collin Sexton (mass communications), tight end Cody Small (kinesiology), tight end Dayton Valentine (kinesiology), offensive lineman Cody Whitehair (social sciences) and defensive end Tanner Wood (animal sciences and industry).

K-State’s seven second-team members included defensive back Nate Jackson (social sciences), defensive end Jordan Kupersmith (social sciences), linebacker Elijah Lee (business), offensive lineman Dalton Risner (communication studies), linebacker Sam Sizelove (industrial engineering), offensive lineman Boston Stiverson (sociology/criminology) and running back Dalvin Warmack (management).

The 2015 accolades marked the sixth time in the last seven seasons the Wildcats had at least 10 academic all-conference honors. Since head coach Bill Snyder’s return in 2009, Kansas State has seen a considerable increase in Academic All-Big 12 honorees as the Wildcats have produced 113 accolades in the last seven seasons (16.1 per season), including 76 first-team honors (10.9 per season).

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the football academic all-league squad consisted of 82 first-team members combined with 59 on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Kansas State plays host to Iowa State this Saturday in Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m., and the game will be shown nationally on FS1. Scattered single seats and standing-room only tickets are available for the game against the Cyclones. Fans wishing to purchase tickets can do so through the K-State Athletics Ticket Office online at www.k-statesports.com/tickets, by phone at 1-800-221-CATS or at the main ticket office inside Bramlage Coliseum.
