K-State Places Record 30 on Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State student-athletes continued to receive honors and accolades for their hard work in the classroom, as 30 Wildcats were named to the 2015-16 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team in an announcement by the conference office on Thursday.

In the four years of the award’s existence, K-State has placed 102 student-athletes on the list. The 30 honorees in 2015-16 surpassed the previous school record of 28 following the 2013-14 academic year.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.

The Wildcats had five student-athletes earn the honor with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The five recipients with 4.0 GPAs were: Nikole Cain (rowing), Laina Ewoldt (track and field), Brett Neelly (track and field), Grace Reilly (rowing) and Zach Reuter (football).

The remaining honorees for the Wildcats on the 2016 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team are: Andrew Beckler (men’s golf), John Boushelle (baseball), Cade Bunnell (baseball), Alex Delton (football), Macy Flowers (volleyball), Jeremy Gandon (men’s golf),  Joe Gorthy (track and field), Kayla Goth (women’s basketball), Zsofia Gyimes (volleyball), Roland Massimino (men’s golf), Ranae Mc Kenzie (track and field), Tyler Merkley (track and field), Jacob Ruder (baseball), Christopher Sandquist (track and field), Davis Schwab (baseball), Alyssa Schultejans (volleyball), Erin Smith (track and field), Michael Smith (baseball), Garett Spencer (baseball), Millie Stretton (tennis), Amanda Thate (track and field), Emma Wren (track and field), Cory Wright (baseball), Brooks Zimmerman (baseball) and Mitchell Zubradt (baseball).

K-State has had another outstanding academic year in 2015-16. The Wildcats had 255 student-athletes on the Fall 2015 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which is the 16th consecutive semester K-State has placed 200 or more student-athletes on the honor roll. K-State saw 82 student-athletes graduate in the 2015-16 school year.

In terms of honors and recognitions from their work in the classroom, K-State student-athletes tallied 118 Academic All-Big 12 honors, Kersten Kober was named the Big 12 Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Kindred Wesemann was named the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Dani Winters was named the Big 12 Women’s Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Wildcats also received academic honors outside of the league such as: Kober, Katie Brand (volleyball), Jack Cantele (football) and Glenn Gronkowski (football) being named CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 selections in their respective sports, while Kelly Thomson was named the November Haier Achievement Award winner.
