K-State Set for Rock Chalk Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State track and field team kicks off the first of its final two regular-season meets as it heads to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in the Rock Chalk Classic at Rock Chalk Park on Saturday. 

This is the second consecutive year that the Wildcats have made their way east down I-70 to compete at the Rock Chalk Classic. During last year’s meet, K-State athletes earned 29 top-five finishes, eight of which were first place finishes. The Wildcats also saw three top-10 program marks set at the meet.

The team is coming off of a strong performance at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas last weekend. At that meet, the Cats earned a total of 12 first-place finishes. 

K-State’s throws group dominated the competition in Arkansas, winning five of the six events that they competed in on Saturday and both events on Friday. 

Senior Akela Jones continued her dominate senior season, setting a new school record in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 12.94. 

Sophomore sprinters A'keyla Mitchell and Terrell Smith also recorded dominant marks in Wildcats’ last meet, Mitchell set a new PR in the 400 meter with a time of 52.34, a time good for third on the school’s all-time list. Smith posted a time of 20.44, finishing just behind Wallace Spearmon, who won the event with a time of 20.40. Spearmon is regarded as one of the top sprinters in world. 

Field events are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT with men’s hammer throw with track events kicking off at 4:00 p.m. CT with the men’s 4x100 meter relay. A full schedule of events for the meet can be found here

For fans wishing to attend the event, tickets can be purchased at the Rock Chalk Park ticket off, which opens at 10 a.m. CT. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. Parking is free for the event.
