K-State Starts Off Strong in Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas – Thanks to a 4-under par performance by junior Katherine Gravel-Coursol, the Kansas State women’s golf team is in fifth place entering the final round of the Red Raider Invitational as the Wildcats carded a 36-hole score of 9-over par 585 at the par-72, 6,541-yard Rawls Course on Friday.

Gravel-Coursol, who carded identical scores of 2-under par 70 in each round, is in second place on the individual leaderboard entering final-round play and on pace to finish in the top-five for the first time in her career. The team’s even-par 288 in the second round was tied for the fifth-lowest round of the season. K-State is one shot ahead of No. 28 SMU and also leads 50th-ranked New Mexico, which is in ninth.

“It was a solid day overall,” K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. “Katherine played well and she did a great job managing the firm, fast and windy conditions. I am proud of all the ladies. We had some tough stretches of holes that cost us some shots, but overall this was a solid effort.”

Joining Gravel-Coursol in the top-20 is junior Madison Talley and freshman Chloe Weir. Talley carded a 2-over par 146 and is tied for 15th. The junior shot 2-under par 70 in the second round to put her in contention for her sixth top-20 finish of the season. Weir is at 3-over par 147 though the first two rounds and sits in a tie for 20th. She is in contention for her second top-20 finish this week after finishing 11th at the Kansas City Shootout on Tuesday.

Rounding out the scoring lineup, sophomore Connie Jaffrey is in a tie for 48th at 9-over par 153, while junior Paige Nelson ended the day in a tie for 53rd at 10-over par 154.

No. 25 BYU leads the way after carding a 1-under par 575 through the first two rounds, one shot better than second-place No. 41 Purdue. Kansas’ Yuaporm Kawinpakorn is on top of the individual leaderboard after shooting a 7-under par 137.

The final round of the Red Raider Invitational will start at 9 a.m., on Saturday. Live stats can be followed on www.golfstat.com and final results will be posted on www.kstatesports.com following the conclusion of play.
