K-State Takes Down North Texas

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The K-State women's tennis team, led by freshmen Ana Garcia Navas and Millie Stretton each earning their second singles wins of the weekend, wrapped up play at Hollingbery Fieldhouse with a 6-1 victory over North Texas on Saturday.

Garcia Navas, playing in the No. 2 position for the first time, moved to 3-0 on the year in dual match singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Anastasia Shestakova. She is tied with Stretton for the most dual match singles victories on the team.

Stretton, competing in the No. 6 position, defeated Augustina Valenzuela 6-3, 6-4, to extend her team-high winning streak in singles to five.

K-State (2-1) also went unbeaten in doubles against the Mean Green (1-1) with pairs Carolina Costamagna and Stretton winning 6-3 in the No. 1 position and Garcia Navas and Iva Bago taking their match 6-4 in the No. 2 position. All three of the pairings were unchanged from Friday's 5-2 loss at Washington State.

"We asked all three doubles teams to make adjustments after yesterday, and they all responded very well," K-State head coach Danielle Steinberg explained. "This is probably the best doubles point we have played so far. The doubles point gave us a lot of energy and we carried it to the singles and everyone played their hearts out."

The Wildcats took five of the six singles matches to finish the day, including wins by the top three positions in Sara Castellano (No. 1), Garcia Navas and Costamagna (No. 3).

Livia Cirnu, competing in the No. 5 position, defeated Alexis Thoma 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 in the only three-match set of the day.

Also competing for the Wildcats were Castellano and Maria Panaite in a doubles match that did not finish and Bago who dropped her singles match against Tamuna Kutubidze 6-2, 6-2.

K-State is now 13-5 in overall dual match singles and 5-2 in doubles.

"I feel like today can be a big turning point for this team," said Steinberg after losing to Washington State the previous afternoon. "Everyone came out so strong, with so much energy and fight and it paid off."

The Wildcats will head back to Manhattan for their first home match of the year as they host Colorado (2-2) on Friday, February 5 at 2 p.m.
