K-State Unable to Capitalize on Great Start at Bridgestone

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After finishing the first round in second place, the Kansas State men’s golf team fell to a tie for seventh place with a 36-hole score of 5-under par 571 in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate held at the par-72 6,880-yard Grandover Resort Golf Course on Sunday.

The Wildcats, who are featuring a scoring lineup comprised entirely of underclassmen, got off to an impressive start with an 8-under par 280 in the first round of play. However, a score of 3-over par 291 in the second round has put K-State in a four-way tie for seventh.

“We got off to a great start today with a very solid opening round,” said head coach Grant Robbins. “I thought the guys got fatigued during the second round and just were not very sharp. We just need to focus on the positive things we did today and finish the tournament off strong tomorrow.”

Freshman Ben Fernandez began the tournament with a season low 18-hole score of 5-under par 67 and was tied for first on the leaderboard but could not build on the start, finishing the day at 3-under par 141 and in a tie for 22nd. 

Another freshman, Jacob Eklund, added additional support the team score following Fernandez on the leaderboard. The Carbondale, Illinois, native is at 2-under par 142 and was able to improve 10 spots from his first-round placement to a tie for 27th thanks to a 3-under par 69 in round two.

Sophomore Jeremy Gandon, who was in the top 10 after the first round, fell on the leaderboard as the Charpey, France, product is tied for 31st at 1-under par 143. Freshman Levi Valadez finished the day in a tie for 43rd at 1-over par 145. Sophomore Andrew Beckler enters final-round play in 60th place at 5-over par 149.

Junior Trent Evans, competing solely as an individual, is tied for 76th at 11-over par 155.
