K-State vs. Newman Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

K-State Head coach Jeff Mittie

On zone defense ….
“I thought it was okay. I still feel like there is too many uncontested shots happening, so while they had a rough night shooting, we are always constantly judging how many uncontested looks did they get. I thought they got a few too many.”

On Kayla Goth start and game…
“Somebody had to start, since we only had eight (players). Not that it is a knock on Kayla. She really has been playing well; she has played well all fall though. She is doing a lot of things. She is Shaelyn Martin-esque, she can really fill up a stat line. So with her sometimes it is scoring, sometimes assists, steals. We saw a little bit of everything tonight.”

On starting game with different players scoring….
“A lot of people touched the ball early in the game tonight. I think that is critical. If one player does it and people are not involved, the first time they really might not have felt in rhythm. I thought tonight our ball movement got everybody in rhythm. That is a big thing, but only playing eight allowed the group that played to get in rhythm better. So they had chances to play through things tonight so that was beneficial. The start where four different players scored that is a much better start for us. It is one thing if (Breanna) Lewis gets every bucket but four or five people touch it as well, we will certainly take those as well. All in all not too bad.”

On play of Mercedes Brooks…
“I thought Mercedes kept it pretty simple. She is a player coming out of high school that is used to having the ball in her hands constantly so she is learning to move it to the right spots better. Once again, she has that ability to fill up a stat sheet. I am a little surprised she does not have as many steals tonight because she is an active player, I will have to look on tape. I like her three assists and only one turnover. That is a good performance from her.”

Senior Guard Kindred Wesemann
On game performance…
“I just had some open shots, took my time and knocked them down, that was about it. We moved the ball really well, we had 32 assists so we had good ball movement and I was open.”

On playing Friday vs. Chicago State…
“I am ready. I am just excited, I love playing games and I love the game of basketball so I am really excited.”

Freshman Guard Mercedes Brooks
On game vs. Newman…
“It was exciting to get on the court to be able to play with my teammates. I think we moved the ball pretty well so I was not really focused on my game, I was focused on everybody’s game. I was excited to see Kaylee Page knock down all of her threes and Kayla Goth, how she played tonight, everybody played well.”

On transitioning to the college level…
“I think my biggest transition coming from high school to college basketball is passing with two hands, I think I struggled a lot coming in passing with one hand. I also think the speed of the game is a lot different and I just cannot play one man basketball. I feel like I have to turn the basketball a lot more coming into college.”

Newman Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Darin Spence
On adjusting for three point shots …
“This game is about who they (K-State) have in uniform, and who we have in uniform. We could have played with seven players and probably would not have been able to score. We were so out of our league in this building, tonight. We played tentatively, we played so nervous, and it was just totally a different team than what we played the other night. I’ll tip my hat off to them, they are pretty good. ”

On taking better shots as the game progressed…
“Offensively, against their man-to-man defense we were just not very good. We dribbled the ball when we should have passed. I think a lot of it is just the nerves, jitters and dare I say being a little bit fearful.”

On playing K-State…
“I am disappointed with our older players who have been in here, but it just gets down to that they (K-State) are pretty good. It is a Big 12 opponent, on their floor and a NCAA tournament team. They are good. They are going to have a good year. They beat us really good two years ago, and I think this team is a lot better than they were two years ago.”
