Kansas State vs. Auburn Postgame Quotes

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“I will just start off by saying I thought that was a heck of a game. I saw both teams do what both teams do and sometimes you do not get a game like that where both teams play to their strengths. I thought Auburn played to their strengths very well. Their press was fantastic. I thought our group handled it well at times and then we had a really bad stretch where we had five turnovers in six possessions. We regrouped and talked in the huddle about winning the last 4:25. I felt that we were in a good place mentally and we would come out and have good possessions offensively and defensively and we did.”

On how facing adversity will help the team ….
“Well, I would like to blow them out by 30 points. I think it is good in a close game to see how you handle situations. You know over the course of the season playing quality opponents you are going to get those situations.”

On playing with Breanna Lewis in foul trouble…
“Sheble has done a great job of that throughout her career she really gives us a good lift. Now we have the ability to go to (Peyton) Williams in the center spot. Peyton played great. She did a lot of really good things. I thought she was really critical in stretches. Our depth is key. I think Auburn was able to recognize that with Lewis out of the game. ”

On bouncing back from a controversial call...
“I think next play is certainly one of the monikers we talk about. You will hear our team talk about next play an awful lot and you will hear our team talk about poise a lot. I really saw our team go into that next play and play it well.”

Junior Forward Shaelyn Martin
On pulling off the rebound . . .
“It was a big play at the time. We all knew we had to get it on the boards. Everybody on that possession had a body on somebody and it gave me an opportunity to release and go get the ball. We did a lot better, especially at the end of the game. We just made sure that they did not get a chance to get it and we were able to get each other chances to go get the board.”

On Peyton Williams . . .
“I think she is a pretty steady player to have there. She is aware of what I am going to do with the ball. What Kindred (Wesemann) is going to do with a ball and she knows her teammates well. In those situations she handles it very patiently. She does not try to rush the play. The defense tried to rush her. She does a very good job of staying patient and going off strong throughout those free throws at the end. I think she does a very good job just being steady throughout the game.

On if this game was her type game . . .
Yes, I love the more physical games. Most of the time I am undersize but I am willing to take some of those hard hits, dives on the floor or anything similar if it going to give us an advantage on the court.

Senior Guard Kindred Wesemann
On motivation after Auburn started 3-for-3 for three points. . .
“I think they were wide open 3-pointers. We did not really play them to the best of our ability. We came out kind of slacking at that point. I wanted to go out and make some more 3-pointers to show that I can do that too. We needed to get out there and guard them and contest those 3s better.”

On how much fun the game was . . .
“Every game is fun to me. It was a big win for us. Auburn is a very great team and I was just very proud of our team and how we performed tonight and I am ready for the next one.”

On how big the win was . . .
“It is very big win. Everyone wants to beat the ranked team. By beating them it is a pretty good way to become one. I would say it was a big deal.”

Head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy
Opening statement…
“I thought that our young ladies came out and fought hard. It is tough place to come and play. Rebounding, of course, was an issue. They are big. We are small. That is the game.”

On rebounding problems….
“They got bigger and we never got bigger. I mean, they are big down there. Our tallest player gets in foul trouble so we have to come back with a smaller post player”

On toughness of team…
“Our team is extremely tough. We are relentless. We are always going to fight and keep fighting. That is who we are. We came back from being down seventeen against Indiana. We are a relentless team so we are going to keep fighting.”
