Kansas State vs. Chicago State Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head coach Jeff Mittie
On how the game progressed…
“I thought we played better as the game went on. We were sluggish at the start, and it felt like we were out of sync. It has felt like we have been battling that the last couple of days in practice. But, we played better as the game went on, and we had some good performances from some individuals. But, I think that those individuals played better as our team played better.”

On “Figure it out.”  …
“I think the ‘figure it out’ slogan is the one thing they constantly get on me about. It’s always when I am mad. You know? It is usually just said about three times, ‘figure it out, figure it out, figure it out.’ You know one of the things I have tried to push this group into doing is making more plays, and to not be so reliant on us to call plays. That is part of ‘figure it out’ is that ‘you (team) guys are smart enough, you are smart players, you need to work together better, and you need to figure some things out on your own without us holding your hands through these stretches. This group knows, I think, when things are going well, and when they are playing well, and they know when they are not.”

On concerns…
“My concern with us right now would just be, we are sluggish at the start. I did not think our focus was great, and it may not be focus, it may just be that we have a lot of new players and are young. The injuries have impacted the consistency of practice the last week, so we are a little out of sync. I thought early in the game they were all trying to do it individually, and that was part of ‘guys play together better, figure this out, play together better, play together better’ and I think you saw them do that.”

On the success of the defense …
“We played a lot of man-to-man tonight because I did not like the pace of the first quarter. The first quarter was just so sluggish, it was hard to watch, hard to play in. I felt like we were kind of lethargic, we mixed and matched it. But, I just do not know until I look at the film. You look at the numbers and you go ‘god the defense is great,’ and then there is a part of me that just goes, ‘not sure it is as good as the numbers say.’ Chicago State struggled shooting the ball, so I will have to look to see. I think we have individuals that are playing better in it. I thought Peyton (Williams) played better. I think that Shaelyn Martin is so much a better defender than she was a year ago, both man and zone. So individually I think we are good there, and I think our length is pretty big out there.”

Senior Guard Kindred Wesemann
On the first quarter …
“I feel like we just were not making the right plays. We were holding the ball a lot and we were not really moving it. I do not feel like we got a lot of touches. We got a lot less than we should have gotten.”

On being a senior…
“It is just great to see the younger players getting in and getting their time. They are doing so well and they push through a lot of hard practices and a lot of tough times. It is just great to see it pay off. It’s my senior season and I want to win and if they are going to score like that I feel like we are going to win.”

Sophomore Guard Kayla Goth
On having fun on the court…
“We definitely had some fun out there I would say as a team. We played really well together and we had some fun and I feel like we play best when we are having fun out there so yes, I had fun.”

On what did you learn from this game…
“I started off with a defensive mentality. I wanted to make the hustle plays and get the boards. When you make the defensive plays, offense comes to you. I would say just the mentality that you go into the game with.”

How important the game was…
“It was a very big game for me, it is a big confidence boost. I had a pretty good offseason. I got out of my brace and stuff like that so coming into the season was really nice. You never know what you can do unless you go out there and find out.”

Freshman Forward Peyton Williams
On your confidence…
“My confidence is definitely a lot higher than it was in the beginning. I can thank my teammates for that, they have been encouraging me from day one. If I miss it they are like keep shooting but yeah it has been a big confidence booster.”
