Kansas State vs. Tulsa Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement …
“I thought there were some good things and some not so good things. Offensively, there were stretches where I thought we played very well – thought we did some positive, positive things. Thought we played through contact better as the game went on. We got a lot of three point plays. I think we moved people around in the post so we had a variety of players down there. They were very physical with Lewis. She’s going to have to play through that better, and that’s going to have to be the strategy coming in that you just know they are going to try to move people off. Now, we can try to take advantage of that because the driving lanes – their post was not sliding over to help, so you saw the advantage of that driving it right down. They were going to leave a body on her the entire game, so we saw some advantages.

Defensively, I told them that we probably won the mannequin challenge at times. We did seem frozen at times out there, and I guess I was not a part of it. I thought they shot the ball very well, so give them credit, they shot the ball well. We have got to have a better awareness in that area and hopefully we’ll improve. Like a lot of teams, we’re a work in progress right now probably because we have had a lot of players in and out of practice more this year than we have in the past. That progress, at times, does not look as smooth. It was good to get Middlebrook back, it was good to get [Eternati Willock] back after a week out, so all those things were positive.”

On younger players playing beyond their years…
“I think both Peyton [Williams] and Eternati [Willock] pass the ball very well. I think that they can get very involved in the passing game. I would not be surprised, as they progress through the offense, to have a lot of assists throughout the season. But yeah, that particular play, I think Peyton has gotten more comfortable. She’s a good passer out of that area, so she does see three-point shooters very well, and that’s an area we need to utilize. You know, in the triangle, everybody gets involved, but the four has the first kind of look at those actions and that’s something they can really be effective. And they are still learning it and they are still young in it, but they can do some good things.”

On scoring 60 points in the paint…
“I don’t know that it has been more of an emphasis. We emphasize it all of the time, but we wanted to get multiple people down there tonight. Breanna [Lewis] stayed away from following the ball a lot and that allowed Peyton [Williams] to get in there, Eternati [Willock] to get in there, [Shaelyn Martin] to get in there, Kaylee Page got in there. We have size across the board. If they are going to lock up on [Lewis] and be physical, then once again, they aren’t helping on others. That was one of the things that we did much, much better tonight. I was glad to see Tulsa play us the way they played us. Obviously, we’ve stepped up each game in competition. They were a much better team and very physical, but I was glad to see that. We need to play against people to get a better idea of how other people may play us.”

On the defensive strategy in the second half…
“Get to the arc. Get to the arc better. Be more committed to getting to the arc. It really was not any more than that. We talked a little about not helping on the dribble. Do not get sucked in on the dribble and let the centers take that play. But other than that, it was more of us just getting to the arc better.”

Kansas State Player Quotes

Senior center Breanna Lewis
On scoring so many points in the paint…
“I love it. I want to keep it going. It is exciting. Especially seeing all of the freshmen scoring so many points in the paint.”

On the freshmen’s performance…
"They come in every day working hard, willing to learn; willing to learn from me, willing to learn from the coaches. So it is very exciting to see. I am kind of sad I will not get to play with them again (after this season), but they will be great and it is very exciting to see."

On Breanna’s performance tonight…
“I really wanted to focus on what I needed to do for the team; getting a win or just playing hard, so I would say yes I just want to play hard every game.

Freshman forward Peyton Williams
On Peyton being Big 12 Freshman of the Week…
“It is exciting to be in season now and the hype is getting me motivated. Consistently feeding off the energy of teammates because they get me pumped every night, I am definitely more of a mellow person so I see them and just get so excited. Yeah I have definitely been feeling the hype recently."

On keeping up the hype and having consistency…
“Every game just coming and feeling like I am a Big 12 Freshman of the Week, just thinking that every time and being aggressive and explosive. I have heard that word from coach all of the time. Just focusing and bringing that energy, I think that will get us through."

On there being competition between Peyton and Eternati for playing time…
“No. I love having Eternati out there with me, it is so awesome we get to play out there together. It was great having her out there tonight; it is great to have her back.”

Freshman forward Eternati Willock
On getting some extended minutes in the game…
“It was really exciting playing with my teammates and feeding off of their energy. I was tired at times, but I thought I pushed through it better than I have before. Having my teammates help me through the tough times, that is what keeps me motivated and keep me in it, mentally more when I am getting tired. "

Tulsa Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Matilda Mossman
On your final thoughts on the game…
“We let that second quarter get away from us. If you take out the second quarter, I thought it was a pretty good battle. The other three quarters we obviously gave up a lot of stuff inside and that’s their strength and they played with their strength. We just didn’t have the size to stop it.”

On what you can build on from this game…
“I told our guys I was so proud of our effort and proud of the way we battled. We played until the end and we are not going to see a team that size in our conference. Our conference is more athletic and quicker and faster so this was good experience for us. It was great for us to see this kind of crowd and venue. We have to take what we did wrong and make some corrections fundamentally and get ready for the next one.”
