Kansas State vs. Washburn Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head coach  Jeff Mittie

On playing better in the second half…
“I thought just late, we were flying around and contesting shots better. I thought our length became more of a factor there, we kept them in front better. I did not like our effort early in the game, which was a big concern, we seemed to be frozen in our thoughts and what we were doing. We were probably thinking way too much. I thought there were a lot of early shots in the game that were uncontested. But I think what you saw late in the game was a lot of contested shots.”

On the first game…
“I think we needed to play a game. We needed to look at film against other people. We needed to play a game. I was disappointed early, we really were not doing the things we had worked on. We go out every day against our male practice squad, who are bigger than us and weigh more than us. We had a size advantage in this game, and early in the game we were not taking advantage of it.”

On injuries…
“I will go back here in between games and just get an update on that (injuries). Lanie Page is the closest to playing, if she gets through a couple of workouts this weekend, then she has a chance to play on Monday. Kayla Goth, I think, is getting some stitches. She was talking on the bench, sarcastic stuff like she always does. She said she was mad about her turnover, I did not think it was the time to tell her ‘I was too.’ That was scary. That was a scary fall.”

Freshman Forward Eternati Willock

On playing her first game…

“It felt good. I thought the nerves got the best of me in the beginning. I was a little timid. I was thinking too much instead of playing basketball, and playing hard and hitting them first before they hit us. I think it was a good start, and in a new environment to get used to. I’m really excited to see what is going to happen on Monday, and further on. ”

Senior Center Breanna Lewis

On slow start out of the gate…
“I think it is just something we need to build upon, coming into the game with intensity. This is the first game of the season, we should not expect that.”

Washburn Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Ron McHenry
On K-State zone…
“We are much more comfortable man to man. We have some new kids trying to get in there but it doesn’t fit their game. It’s a different zone and it is really long. If you go deep into it, they are going to trap it so we turned it over a bunch. We are trying to find a way that we can look at it and then they stole it a few times. That’s what they do, they are very good at it and we just have to see the line but the season is pretty young.”

On positives to take away…
“The first half I thought we played good and we played hard. The second half I was a little disappointed. There were just points we were giving up. There were 22 points in the fourth quarter to 0, that’s not a very good thing. Just keeping it close, playing well, we decided to let it go. We did play well, we had some tough match ups. We had a great stretch in the first half, we just never got the ball back.”

On the exhibition game…
“Every game is a different game and K-State plays a totally different game. They are going to go out and pressure you in that zone. We have to get better just competing and winning games.”
