Letter from A.D. John Currie - January 25
In other news:The Voice of the Wildcats is Kansas' Best!I, along with all of Wildcat Nation, have been so impressed with the professionalism and passion of our K-State Sports Network broadcast team, and that hard work has been rewarded as Voice of the Wildcats Wyatt Thompson was recently named the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Congrats to Wyatt on this terrific honor. We appreciate what he, Brian, Stan, Matt and the rest of the crew do for K-State Athletics and Wildcat Nation. I also want to extend our deepest condolences from Wildcat Nation to Wyatt and his family on the recent passing of his father, Allyn. He and his family have been in our thoughts and prayers, and we appreciate Brian Smoller and others filling in on our various network broadcasts during this difficult time. Basketball Teams Continue to RollBoth basketball teams continue play at high levels and will make home appearances this week at Bramlage Coliseum beginning with the second-place women's team tonight. Coach Patterson's squad will take on Iowa State at 7 p.m., on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Fans 14 and under wearing their basketball jersey will receive a free general admission ticket to the game, which will also air on Cox Kansas 22 in the state of Kansas. The No. 22 men's squad is coming of its first win at Oklahoma State in 11 seasons and is 14-4 heading into tonight's game at Texas Tech. The men's team returns home on Saturday when Oklahoma visits Bramlage. More Spring Team UpdatesCoach Rovelto's nationally-ranked track and field teams have hosted a couple of indoor meets so far this month with several meet and school record-shattering performances. Mantas Silkauskas ran a school-record and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 7.69 in the 60m hurdles this past weekend, while Erik Kynard currently has the WORLD'S No. 1 high jump after clearing 7-07.00 (2.31m) this season - that's high enough to clear basketball 7-footers Jordan Henriquez and Adrian Diaz! Remember, some of the world's top track and field performers will be in Manhattan later this spring when we host the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 11-13. Coach Bietau and our 46th-ranked tennis team head to Clemson, S.C., this weekend to face Wake Forest, Purdue and the home-standing Tigers, looking to build upon the squad's 1-1 start. The Wildcat equestrian team also kicks off its spring schedule this weekend in Tennessee with matchups against UT-Martin on Friday and New Mexico State on Saturday. We are also excited to be hosting the 2012 Big 12 Equestrian Championship in Manhattan the weekend of March 30. Baseball Season is Upon UsComing off a third-straight NCAA Regional appearance, Coach Hill and the baseball squad open up practice at Tointon Stadium on the newly-installed AstroTurf infill playing surface this Friday in preparation for the February 18 season opener at Cal State Bakersfield. Season tickets remain available for as little as $75 for the 30-game home schedule that begins March 2. Check k-statesports.com for more information. Four Department Staffers PromotedEarlier this week we announced the promotions of four department staffers, all of whom are key members of our leadership team and well-respected by all of our staff members. Casey Scott has been promoted to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Operations and Event Management, Laird Veatch to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Initiatives, Chad Weiberg to Senior Associate Athletics Director for Development and Mike Clark to Senior Director of Development. While our overall athletics staff may be among the smallest in the Big 12 Conference, I believe they work as hard and with as much maximum purpose and efficiency as any staff in the country, and I am so proud of the team we have here!
