Letter from A.D. John Currie -- September 23
We have had a busy week of competition at home and will continue to do so through the weekend and into next week. Congratulations to the men's golf team as it won the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate Monday at Colbert Hills, beating second place KU by 22 strokes! The women's team will be in action next Monday and Tuesday at Colbert Hills for the Marilynn Smith/ Sunflower Invitational. It is a great (and free) way to support our student-athletes and get outside on such a beautiful course.Be sure to head out to Ahearn Field House tonight as Coach Fritz and the volleyball team continue Big 12 play when they host Texas Tech at 7 p.m. The atmosphere has been great all season, including a crowd of nearly 2,000 last week for the Oklahoma match.
Another great crowd is anticipated Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium as we take on Tennessee Tech and celebrate Fort Riley Day, Band Day and University Family Day.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early to the game on Saturday as pregame activities will begin 30 minutes prior to kickoff. A Color Guard unit that will represent all Fort Riley unit colors, a helicopter flyover at the conclusion of the National Anthem and the thunderous firing of an old civil war cannon when the Wildcats take the field are among the scheduled festivities.
During halftime, participants in Fort Riley Day and Band Day will also join forces with the Pride of Wildcat Land for the 1812 Overture, which will include the firing of four 75 mm Howitzer cannons. It is sure to be one of the most exciting Fort Riley Days of all time.Less than 5,000 tickets remain, and you can order online at www.k-statesports.com or you may also purchase them at the K-State Athletic Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum. If you wish to personally discuss ticket options, you can also call the ticket office at (785) 532-7606. Remember, you can receive $10 off any ticket this weekend by showing your ticket stub from the UMass game, and you can also purchase tickets for $10 and donate them to Fort Riley for soldiers and their families.
We will also take time Saturday to recognize the work of all of our student-athletes. Did you know that Kansas State currently holds the No. 1 all-sports graduation rate in the Big 12 Conference? The ranking demonstrates the commitment to academic excellence by our student-athletes and reflects the expectation of academic achievement promoted by K-State coaches, staff, faculty and administration.
Two weeks from now, the K-State Nation heads to Kansas City to face off with Iowa State. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. with events taking place in and around Arrowhead Stadium and the Kansas City area all weekend. The K-State Alumni Association will kick the weekend off on Thursday with a beer tasting and tour of the Boulevard Brewing Company at 6:30 p.m. The Kansas City Catbackers will hold a pep rally Friday at 5:30 p.m. at The Other Place, while the K-State Alumni Association will also hold a pregame event at Arrowhead Stadium beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday in conjunction with KMAN and K-ROCK's Powercat Gameday pregame event.Great seats still remain for that contest, so click here to order tickets or for more information. As always, I appreciate your comments and suggestions, so keep sending me your thoughts, ideas, concerns or questions. I do ask for your patience with my responses; I want to personally answer your questions. Thanks, and Go Cats!John Currie
