Men 3rd, Women 4th at New Mexico Team Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Competing in its first meet outside of the state of Kansas, the Kansas State track and field team had a strong outing as the men’s side finished in third place with 71 points and the women finished in fourth place with 75 points at the New Mexico Team Invitational on Saturday. 

Colorado State’s women went on to win the competition with 113.50 team points, while the Nebraska men’s team won the meet with a total score of 109 points. 

The Wildcat throwers had solid day as junior Janee’ Kassanavoid kicked off the meet with a first-place finish in weight throw with a mark of 18.75m/61-06.25. Senior Brady Grunder recorded a second-place finish in the same event with a throw of 19.15m/62-10.00, while junior Mitch Dixon took third with a throw of 18.43m/60-05.75. 

Senior Dani Winters also recorded a win for the throw groups, winning shot put with a throw of 17.07m/56-00.00, moving her into third all-time in school history.  

Long jumper Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye set a new personal best with a leap of 7.52m/24-08.25 to earn second place, while high jumper Kim Williamson also recorded a second place finish with a mark of 1.78m/5-10.00. 

On the track, senior Tia’ Gamble took first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.68, her second first-place finish in the event this season. Sophomore A’Keyla Mitchell also recorded her second first-place finish of the season in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.50, while junior Kain Ellis finished second in the 800 meter run with a mark of 1:51.32. 

The Wildcat relay group of Sonia Gaskin, Mitchell, Keiteyana Parks and Gamble took first place in the 4x400 meter relay with a time 3:39.53, four seconds faster than second-place finisher Texas Tech. 

The Wildcats return to action next weekend as the team travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Sevigne Husker Invitational. Event times for both days of competition can be found here.
