Men’s Golfers Shoot 7-under Tuesday to Claim Fourth

MOBILE, Ala. – Kansas State men’s golf junior Jack Rickabaugh birdied three of his final five holes during the final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday to propel the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish in their first competition of the spring.

K-State entered the final 18 holes at Magnolia Gross Crossings Golf Course in fifth place at 1-over par, but posted its second-best round of the year by carding a 7-under par 281 to claim fourth place with a three-round total of 6-under par 858.

“I am really proud of how the guys competed this week,” said head coach Grant Robbins. “We did a great job today of keeping the ball in play and had lots of good birdie looks. We finished off the round much better, which is something we have been stressing all year.”

Rickabaugh sat at 1-over par after 36 holes, but he began Tuesday by shooting par on his first 13 holes before stringing together birdies on holes 14, 16 and 17 to record his best finish of the season at 3-under 69. Rickabaugh’s 3-under day helped him jump 11 spots to a tie for 12th place.

He was joined in 12th by junior Matt Green, who posted his second 2-under 70 to grab his third top-20 finish of the year. Senior Kyle Weldon fell behind with three bogeys on the course’s back nine, but snatched a birdie on his 15th hole and closed out the day with back-to-back birdies to finish at even-par 72. Weldon earned his second top-20 finish of the year, tying for 17th with his even-par score.

Freshman Andrew Beckler closed out his final round by going 2-under on his last four holes to enter the clubhouse with his best round of the tournament at 2-under par 70. His 54-hole score of 221 put him in a tie for 43rd on the individual board. The final round for Trent Evans finished at 6-over par 78 to give him an 8-over weekend and a tie for 54th.

Auburn, the fourth-ranked team in the nation, won its fourth-consecutive Mobile Bay Intercollegiate by 14 strokes with a 26-under par score of 838. The Tigers landed three golfers within the top-three spots, including tournament champion Michael Johnson, who posted a 4-under final round to finish at 14-under par 202. The No. 2 ranked squad, Wake Forest, was deadlocked with K-State during the back stretch, but pulled ahead late to finish in third place at 8-under par.

“We hung in there with the No. 2 team in the country so it is definitely something we can build on.”

In the USA Individual Tournament at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course, K-State’s Hank Simpson carded a 3-over 74 while freshman Roland Massimino shot his second 2-over round to finish off the weekend. Simpson and Massimino led all Wildcats with their 7-over par scores of 220 to finish in a tie for 10th place.

Junior Connor Knabe dropped from 10th to 17th place with his 8-over final round, while sophomore Oscar Spolander closed out the tournament with a 5-over 76, putting him in a tie for 18th at 12-over par.

The next team action for the Wildcats will be March 6-8 at the Tiger Invitational in Opelika, Alabama.
