MANHATTAN, Kan. – A’Keyla Mitchell is set to represent K-State Track and Field as part of Team USA in the 28th World University Games, held in Gwangju, South Korea. Competing in this evening’s women’s 200-meter preliminary heats, Mitchell is one of 45 student-athletes selected to represent the USA team in track and field.

The Games, which got underway earlier this month, involve more than 20 different areas of sports. Round one of track action, set to make up four-straight days of competition, kicked off yesterday with several U.S. athletes earning qualifying marks to advance to event semifinals. Track events comprise the majority of the medals events at the Games, making up for 50 of 272 medals total – the bulk of those medals will be handed out in the next three days.

Mitchell, who is competing in her second summer competition of the season – she also ran the 200m at the USATF Championships this past June – will run in the fourth of six heats in tonight’s 200m preliminaries. The heat is set to go at 11:01 a.m. GMT on Thursday, July 9, in Gwangju, which converts stateside to later this evening at 9:01 p.m. CT.

Completing her first full season with the Wildcats, Mitchell shined, earning All-American honors in the 200-meter both indoors and outdoors, while also serving as an integral part of the women’s 4x400-meter relay squad. Mitchell was responsible for breaking six school records between indoor and outdoor competition, as well as completed the Big 12 Outstanding Freshman of the Year season sweep.

The Wildcats, as a whole, have plenty of summer action on tap following this week’s competition in Gwangju, with the Pan American Games up next in Toronto, Canada, at the end of July. From there, select Wildcats will also compete in the NACAC Senior Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, before ending the summer in Beijing, China, for the IAAF World Championships – both in August.
