AT THE PLATE
Coming off a four-game series split at UC Riverside to open the year, K-State will face a pair of Pac-12 opponents at the Big 12/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Arizona ... The Wildcats open the weekend against No. 5 Oregon State (3-1) on Thursday and Friday before facing Utah (1-3) on Saturday and Sunday ... All four games will be at Surprise Stadium, Spring Training home of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers ... K-State faced both teams at last year’s Big 12/Pac-12 Challenge ... The Wildcats beat Utah in walk-off fashion, 3-2, to open last year’s tournament before falling to the Beavers in the final at-bat, 10-9 the next day ... Both of those games took place at Surprise Stadium as well.
LAST TIME OUT
K-State has started a season with a 2-2 record for the second straight year after the Wildcats took games one and three of the four-game series at UC Riverside ... The Wildcats notched their first Opening Day shutout since 2007 when they trumped the Highlanders, 1-0, last Friday ... Starter Corey Fischer led the Wildcats to the shutout with 5 scoreless innings while Jordan Floyd contributed 3 innings ... In game 2, the Wildcats walked in 2 runs in the 8th inning to cut the UC Riverside lead to 4-3, but the Highlanders dropped in 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take the game, 6-3 ... In game 3, K-State busted out for season-highs in hits (9) and runs (8) as the Wildcat offense drove in all of its runs with 2 outs in the 8-1 victory ... Tyler Wolfe and Steve Serratore each had 3 RBI while starting pitcher Levi MaVorhis did not allow a run in 7 innings ... In the series finale, UC Riverside scored 5 runs from the 5th through the 7th innings to build a 6-1 lead, but the Wildcats scored 2 runs in the 9th and brought the go-ahead run to the plate before falling, 6-3.
INSIDE THE OREGON STATE SERIES
K-State trails the all-time series against Oregon State, 4-6 ... The Wildcats have dropped 3 straight to the Beavers, a stretch that started with game 2 of the NCAA Corvallis Super Regional in 2013 ... Each of the last 2 games have been decided by one run ... K-State’s last win against Oregon State was on June 8, 2013 (W, 6-2 in 10 inn.) ... K-State’s first 3 wins in the series were all by one run ... The first meeting took place on March 23, 1971 in Riverside, California (K-State won, 10-9).
INSIDE THE UTAH SERIES
K-State leads the all-time series against Utah, 2-0 ... In addition to last year’s 3-2 win in Surprise, K-State topped the Utes, 10-2, in the first meeting on February 16, 2001 in Albuquerque, New Mexico ... Utah is one of two teams in the Pac-12 that K-State has a perfect -- and winning -- record against (other: UCLA, 3-0).
OFF TO A GOOD START
K-State turned in a 2.91 ERA during last weekend’s series at UC Riverside, making it the second straight year that the pitching staff has a team ERA under 3.00 after the first 4 games ... The team ERA is helped by a 2.42 mark among the 4 K-State starters ... Corey Fischer (5.0 IP) and Levi MaVorhis (7.0 IP) combined to hold the Highlanders scoreless over 12 combined innings in games one and three ... Adding in No. 2 starter Parker Rigler (.190), and the first 3 starters of the staff (Fischer, .188; MaVorhis, .160) have held opponents to a combined .177 batting average against (11-for-62) ... Those trio of starters also limited UC Riverside to a .150 clip against with 2 outs (3-for-20) and just 4 extra-base hits ... Including Kalmus, the 4 starters have a combined .235 batting average against ... The group’s WHIP is just 1.03 as it has 19 hits and 4 walks over 22 1/3 innings.
Offensively with 2 outs, K-State is hitting .348 (16-for-46) ... Of the 15 total runs scored this year by the Wildcats, 11 have been with 2 outs ... Jake Wodtke (4-for-5, .800), Tyler Moore (2-for-3, .667), Steve Serratore (4-for-7, .571), Clayton Dalrymple (2-for-5, .400) and Jake Scudder (2-for-5, .400) are all hitting above .400 with 2 outs so far in the young season ... 3 of Serratore’s 4 RBI are with 2 outs while Scudder and Wodtke each have a pair of 2-out RBI.
Jake Wodtke is the team leader in hitting so far as the redshirt junior has a .385 clip (5-for-13) in the first 4 games ... He also paces the team with a .529 OBP and 5 hits ... Wodtke is the only Wildcat to have more than one multi-hit effort ... He had 2 hits on February 20 and 21 ... Dating back to his last 12 games of the 2015 season, Wodtke is hitting .340 (17-for-50) over his last 16 contests.
Jake Wodtke is one of 4 Wildcats that reached base safely in all 4 games last weekend ... The other members of that group include Clayton Dalrymple, Steve Serratore and Tyler Wolfe ... All 4 are upperclassmen ... Dalrymple (.444), Serratore (.400) and Wodtke (.529) each have OBPs .400 or higher ... Wolfe, meanwhile, has a .389 OBP -- but a .400 clip over the last 3 games.
Tyler Wolfe enters this weekend the owner of a 26-game on-base streak, a stretch that started on April 17, 2015 ... Over the 26-game streak, Wolfe has a .462 OBP (32 hits, 20 walks, 3 HBP/119 plate appearances) ... It is the longest on-base streak by a Wildcat since Nick Martini had a 93-game stretch from 2009-11.
MAN OF STEAL
Clayton Dalrymple stole 3 bases in the first 4 games of the season ... Through February 23, Dalrymple was tied with Oklahoma’s Sheldon Neuse for the Big 12 lead in stolen bases ... The senior is the Big 12 leader among active players with 28 career stolen bases.
Levi MaVorhis did not allow a run over his 7 innings this past Sunday as the senior earned his 14th career win ... He is first among active Big 12 players in wins as well as innings pitched (170.2) ... He needs one more win to move into a tie for 8th place in K-State history ... Three players are currently tied for the 8th spot, with the last being Kyle Hunter (2009-11) ... No pitcher has thrown more innings for K-State since 2013, MaVorhis’ freshman season.
While the K-State roster features 8 seniors, the Wildcats have played 5 freshman position players and 5 freshman pitchers so far this year ... Of the 27 players to log time, 14 had never played Division I prior to last weekend (4 junior college transfers).
