K-State Head Coach Jeff Mittie Quotes

Opening statement…
“I thought we did alright. I was disappointed in the second quarter because I thought we could have competed harder. I thought we gave them some easy looks at times in that stretch and then on the glass we will have to compete better. I was pleased with the second half and I thought we did better and did some good things. I thought we had more energy and I thought we got the ball in some good spots. Obviously, we had an advantage with Breanna [Lewis] down there size-wise and I think we could have taken advantage of that more, but we did throw it in there enough and she had a big night for us. All in all, it was not too bad of a start for us.”

On the team shooting…
“We have good shooters on this team but we have not been shooting the ball very well as of late. It was good to see it get going. I think we have good shooters and we are going to shoot the ball better than a year ago but it is going to take a little bit of time for us to get comfortable. It was good to see Megan [Deines] get comfortable there and she hit some good shots. It was good to see Kindred [Wesemann] get a couple down because she was struggling yesterday. I think we are going to shoot the ball better. Early on I could see how badly they wanted to make it because they wanted to get that first one down, but once we got a couple to go everybody relaxed.”

On Breanna Lewis making more shots than last year…
“She has really improved and worked hard to get her footwork better. Time is part of that, but you also have to put the time in the gym. She had a good summer and a good, productive fall. I think our team knows we need to feed off of her. Tonight I think the adjustment that we need to get to quicker is that they really started to attack her dribble in the second half and we had some turnovers there. She is a much improved player and has had a very good fall.”

On the practice team…
“I did not see the aggressiveness that I expected to see because of being pushed and shoved around. We seem to be waiting for that, but we need to be the initiator of that. We need to take advantage of our size right away. We went into the fourth quarter and only shot maybe four free throws. We have got to get to the bonus and we have got to do it in earlier quarters.

On the new quarters…
“We scrimmaged a lot prior to this and a lot of it was for us coaches, to try to get used to it. For them it is only a minute more, but it is different. The media timeouts are so long, so that was a little bit different. I did not notice too badly except for the timing of subs is a little bit different. I thought it worked okay tonight, but we do want to make sure we allow players to get into the flow before we sub them. We will take a look and see what we think on film.”

Kansas State Player Quotes
Forward Breanna Lewis

On her improvement…
“I feel like we have to give our practice players some credit because they are the ones that really helped me improve.”

On playing against someone other than practice players…
“It is nice to see someone else so you get to see how much your hard work has paid off.”

Guard Megan Deines
On playing someone new…
“It was exciting, especially with the boys, they push us really hard. They are faster and stronger. It is just nice to see someone else.”

On playing her first game for K-State…
“It has been a while for me just to get comfortable. I felt like I should get to the rim first then move to the three. I am just excited to get back out with the fans and playing in front of a new atmosphere. I enjoyed it.”

Washburn Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Ron McHenry

On forcing perimeter shots…
“They went zone for most of the game, so that scared me. We have not really worked against a zone yet. They are really long and they could stretch. We hit some shots and then they went man and we hit some shots on them when they went man. We just did not look very good against man. Their pressure is pretty decent. We just did not have the timing down. We had a couple new wings out there that just did not look good. We could not get open and we threw the ball away in front of the bench, there, just trying to get the offense started. We turned the ball over and then we just got out of rhythm. Their defense changed to man and we just did not play very well. I thought there was one offense we play well because we have been practicing more man than zone, so that is disappointing because we have been practicing it even though it did not look like it.”

On going against zone they have not seen…
“Yes, I was nervous about that. They were long and could stretch and play passing lanes. You saw us early on holding the ball a little bit too long. We finally started getting shots. Julie (Ravn) did not shoot very good – the one that can really shoot it. So, if she shoots out in the zone, they are probably out there a little quicker, which means that is probably worse for us. We did some nice things against a zone. I was a little worried about that, but yes, I was not worried about our man offense. We did not do very well against the man, so we have to go back and figure it out. Sometimes you have to teach kids the things that go on the court, not just practice, and we have been telling them to get open, make strong moves and have the right time – tonight we did not do that when the pressure got good defensively.”
