Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On tonight’s game...
“Obviously, it was a heartbreaking loss for us. We played with a lot of heart and determination in the second half. We gave ourselves a chance, but we made some mistakes down the stretch. We could have found a way to win the game, but we didn’t. It’s amazing what Maryland does. This is the fourth or fifth game they’ve come from behind and found a way to win it. Obviously, Melo [Trimble] makes big plays. It’s disappointing. We had some really nice performances.

“I’m proud of them. They battled and played with a lot of heart. This was somewhat of a road game. Obviously, Maryland had more people there. Our guys kept coming back, making plays and doing the things you need to do. I really thought we had gotten over the hump when we were up by three.  To Maryland’s credit, they made the plays that made the difference.”

On positives from tonight’s game...
“D.J. Johnson had 26 points and eight rebounds. He played his heart out and like a senior. Wesley Iwundu had a double-double and kind of carried us in the first half when we were a little stagnant. Our two sophomores, Kamau Stokes and Barry Brown, really stepped up in the second half. We probably have to get some more of our guys. That will come with time and experience. We played with a lot of heart and did a lot of good things. We just didn’t win the game. That was a last thing on the board. Find a way to win the game and make the plays. We didn’t make them. Now, we’re going to go home, grow up and get better.”

On Melo Trimble...
“He’s just gets a head of steam. We knew what was coming and talked about it in the huddle. He’s good at it. He gets his body into you and draws fouls, makes plays. We missed that free throw. In hindsight, maybe we should have taken everyone off the line. I guess if I had to do it again, maybe that’s what I’d do. You’d have wall there because he’s coming and makes plays.”

Maryland Head Coach Mark Turgeon
On tonight’s game...
“I’m proud of my team. We beat a really good team tonight; a really well coached team. (Kansas State) seemed like they made every shot in the second half. They really shot it well. They made 55% of their shots against us, which no team has come close to. Our guys didn’t quit. We had a lot of shots roll in and out. I felt like we weren’t getting a lot of breaks but we never stopped. (Michal) Cekovsky had a great night and Melo (Trimble) just does what he does late in the game.”

“We did a lot of great things coming out of timeouts. The guys did a great job of executing. The bench gave us 22 points tonight which is a step in the right direction. The difference in the game was we only had eight turnovers. To me K-State is the best defensive team we have played, and we only had eight turnovers.”

On having Damonte Dodd back in the lineup after injury...
“This is the first game all year where we have had everyone healthy. We still haven’t practiced with a healthy team. With (Michal) Cekovsky’s length, Damonte Dodd’s length, and Justin Jackson’s length we were able to protect the rim a little bit.”

On playing in New York...
“We like coming to New York. We have a lot of alumni up here. We’ve played a lot up here in my six years, and it’s good to win. I thought the crowd really helped us defensively and kept us energized throughout the game. We like coming up here.”

Guard Melo Trimble
On the play where he scored the winning basket...
“I just know the best decision when the game is going like that is to just go to the basket. Even though we weren’t getting calls, I needed to attack the basket and I did that. Once I got the foul called I just needed to make the free throw.”

Forward Michal Cekovsky
On what he worked on during off-season...
“I stayed here over the summer and worked with our strength and conditioning coach in the weight room. I worked on my game with the mangers. I just tried to work on everything.”
