Postgame Quotes: K-State vs. UTA

Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
On the slow start…
“I think you have to give Arlington credit. They held Baylor to 62 even though they did not score at all. They do some things that I think are conducive to being hard to score against. They are very patient offensively and you have to play defense against them for 25 seconds. If you are not getting steals, which we did at times, but then you have to go play offense and they do a really good job with ball pressure. They also do a good job being physical in the post. Those two areas gave us trouble all night. Why we scored at the end? I thought Kindred [Wesemann] really made some good decisions at the end of both quarters and got us some buckets. They were really not letting her use the ball screens. She made some good reads off not using the ball screens and got clean looks.”

On playing three games in five days…
“The goal for us is to be a more consistent basketball team when we come out of this stretch. When you play three games in five days you are going to face a lot of challenges. We are going to face a team on Saturday that on film has played a lot of zone like us. That will be a different challenge for us to get different shots. We hope we are a team that can win a lot of different ways. We want to be able to win by pounding the ball inside and we want to be able to win when they take that away with threes. We will see if we are a better basketball team after this stretch. We have practiced decent after the holidays. The other thing is when you have eight days it is different getting back on the court. We made more shots today than we did yesterday. You should have seen practice yesterday. The bucket was wide open compared to practice yesterday. Anyway, I thought we did some decent things tonight.”

On Kindred Wesemann’s third quarter performance…
“I would love to tell you there was some big speech at halftime, but I really think we kept it pretty simple today and talked about where we could win the battles. Where I thought Kindred [Wesemann] was really good was when we had talked about not letting them use the ball screens. She had the ball in her hands a lot of the plays, and you saw her make very good reads and in handling those reads. It really made it tough for UT Arlington to handle the ball screen.”

K-State Player Quotes

Sophomore Guard Shaelyn Martin
On stepping up when Breanna Lewis is struggling…
“I let her know that I have her back in those situations. You cannot have perfect games, and when she struggles she knows I have her back. It gives me an opportunity to step up and gives her more opportunities to get her confidence back up and get some drive kick-outs like tonight for our shooters.”

Junior Guard Kindred Wesemann
On tonight’s third-quarter performance…
“I do not really remember what coach said at halftime to be completely honest. I feel like I am more confident in my decision making and I just stepped up and hit some shots.”

UT Arlington Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Krista Gerlich
On tonight’s performance…
“Well, I think Kansas State is a really good basketball team. I think they have a lot of weapons. They can definitely shoot the basketball well. They kind of jumped on us early and kind of punched us in the mouth, and we never did respond. I am disappointed in our effort and that we did not respond better to that, but also, I think you have to give credit to K-State for just having a little bit of swag and knowing that they were supposed to win that ball game. They came out and played like it.”

On improvements with ten days off…
“Toughness. We have got to play harder. We have to be tougher than that. I thought we had some opportunities in the first quarter to really get to the rim and be aggressive on the inside, and we passed it out every single time. We shot two free throws the whole first half, so we just have to get tougher mentally and physically.”
