Postgame Quotes: K-State vs. UTRGV

Kansas State Head Coach & Player Quotes
Head coach Jeff Mittie

Opening statement…
“I thought offensively it was a struggle most of the night. We just seemed to really struggle moving the basketball and then maybe some good stuff got covered up by free throw shooting. When you go 9-of- 24 from the free throw line, it is hard to feel good even if you have really done some good stuff to get to the line. We have a lot of areas to get better at. The area that I am pleased with is the rebounding. It has really improved over the last two weeks. I told this team that they had to rebound the basketball better to be good. They made a commitment to getting better there. We have seen a huge improvement there. I thought our high-low game was good tonight, for the most part. It would have been really good if we would have converted free throws.”

On the third quarter…
“I thought our ball movement was better. I kind of whipped them in one of the timeouts. They had to stop holding the ball. We got locked in on one pass and were not seeing the whole floor. We just really wanted them to move as quick as they could to maybe find some rhythm. We have been out of sync offensively for a week or two now. We just have to get back in practice and get back in sync.”

On the defense…
“I really think our group is doing a pretty solid job there. Our rebounding is so much better. This is a team (UT Rio Grande Valley) that really offensive rebounds the ball pretty well. They struggled shooting the ball tonight, but I think our defense had a pretty good hand in that too. (Anushka) Maldonado shot the ball well tonight, but we did a great job on (Shawnte’) Goff, their leading scorer. I think our defense has been pretty good.”

K-State Player Quotes

Guard Megan Deines
On having people step up…
“I feel like this team, whoever has an off night, someone always comes up and helps out. I feel like Kindred’s (Wesemann) shots were not falling, but Kaylee (Page) stepped up and it was great. I feel like it is hard for people to scout us because if someone does have an off night, someone else is going to step up.”

On her ankle…
“This is the first game that it was nice playing. I was not thinking about it so we are getting there. Slowly, but surely.”

Forward Kaylee Page
On offensive play…
“We honestly just started moving the ball and hitting the open person like coach (Jeff Mittie) had asked us to do all game long and things just finally fell into place. I felt like we were not even running our offense. We were just playing with one another and things just clicked.”

On rebounding…
“Coach just told us to rebound. Two weeks ago he said, ‘If you guys rebound, you get an extra off day.’ So, we were like, we are winning this rebound battle right now, and I think it has just continued through that.”

UT Rio Grande Valley Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Larry Tidwell
On what the team did well…
“We played hard. We have been on the road for eight days and we have been all over the country. We are finishing an eight day road trip and we have played five games. It has been taxing, but that is ok. We fought and we just have to keep getting better. I like my team and I like my kids and we are going to compete for a WAC championship. We just have to get home and get a little rest.”

On taking this game to improve going in to conference…
“People are going to run the zone against us. After seeing what K-State did to us, we have to continue to improve, penetrate, kick and move to get some shots.”
