Postgame Quotes: K-State vs. Western Illinois

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“I thought it was a pretty good performance by us. I was concerned about this one because they shoot the three so well. When you look at them statistically they get to the free throw line and they do not turn the ball over. We, really in every area, kept them below their average. They only average 12 turnovers and we got them to 18. They average 15-to-17 free throws a game and we held them to five. They average 12 three-pointers a game and we held them to five. I am pretty pleased with our defensive effort and offensively I thought we shared the ball well. We showed the discipline that we might have not shown a couple weeks ago when we had an advantage. We stayed with it until they stopped it. I thought we kept going inside and going inside. That showed our maturity and our awareness that maybe two weeks ago we did not show very well.”

On outscoring them in the second quarter…
“That number was crazy. I got to half and I looked at it and we outscored them 31 to four. We played very well in that stretch. They really tried to pressure us in the trigger area, but what we did such a nice job of handling their pressure there. We got the ball moved and they had trouble getting help side. [Breanna] Lewis was left one on one down there and she finished it.”

On how the team was moving the ball…
“It was a lot better than it was the other night, where I felt like we were just throwing it to the general direction of a white jersey. I thought we had purpose with our passes. I think that allows [Breanna] Lewis to have better timing. She was making very quick decisions in there to go score. A lot of that had to do with our ball movement. We have been working real hard to improve her timing and post up, and then knowing to go score. Do not question it and make your move. If she continues to do those things it will be hard to double team her. I did think our passing was much better.”

Center Breanna Lewis
On her performance…
“I feel like each game has been an improvement for me. My teammates are getting me the ball and I am finishing, so in every aspect it is getting better.”

On her size advantage…
“My coaches say when I get the ball, to score. That is the objective. That is what I want to do every time, and we have been practicing that in practice. It is getting into the rhythm and I am kind of used to doing that now.”

Guard Brianna Craig
On her performance…
“It was just our focus in practice that we knew that they were going to be shooters. Coach stressed that they were going to get shots off, and they are going to get three’s off. We needed to make sure that they were rushed three’s and they are what we want them to take. That was something that we focused on and did well tonight. With me the last few games, I felt like I have just been in a slump, so I focused on just getting in the gym and getting some extra shots up. If I do not hit one I just need to focus on the next one, so that is one thing that I brought to the game tonight.”
