Postgame Quotes vs. ISU

Kansas State Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Jeff Mittie
On difficulty of having to answer Iowa State’s baskets…
“We dug a hole, so that is what we put ourselves in. I do give Iowa State credit for answering. We made some big plays to make a push, but they seemed to have some pretty timely answers to it. I give those guys credit. What I will be disappointed at when I look at the film is I want to see how many of those were poorly guarded by us and self-inflicted by us. That would be my frustration, but they made the shots.”

On defensive play at the end of the game…
“I think we were in scramble mode. When we go back and look at it, we were trying to get them to shoot quicker because of the deficit. We were able to create some turnovers that way. They did struggle with some of that. They also shot it quick, but we were able to get a few quick shots that way. They had the possession. I do not exactly know the time, but 4:27, where they milked it down and got the layup with two or three seconds on the shot clock. That is when we have to go quicker here. We have got to get them to take some shots because that was deflating. We played pretty good defense for 25 seconds and then they made that play. I think it was (Seanna) Johnson in the lane that got loose and (Jadda) Buckley made a nice pass to her. They made good decisions with the ball and that is why they won this game. They did some good things.”

On Iowa State’s defense against Breanna Lewis…
“I do not think they were doing anything too significant. They were making her work and they were shoving her off some. They have good size in there, (Bryanna) Fernstrom in there and then they bring in (Meredith) Burkhall so they have decent size. If she took a dribble, they tried to attack it, but they did not get the turnovers out of that. Lewis got off to a little bit of a rough start, but I think she played okay.”

Guard Megan Deines
On playing from behind…
“I just read that we never lead this game. We were playing catch up the entire game from the start. We got down maybe 15 and then we got it down to three points. It is just a constant grind. It is like you are playing catch up. You are worried about keeping them off the glass and coming back and trying to score. It is just back and forth.”

Iowa State Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Bill Fennelly
On big 3-pointers…
“Yeah, we had some big ones. Jadda [Buckley] was shooting it as good as she has ever shot it. I thought Emily Durr had nine huge points in a row. Bridget [Carlton] hit some big ones. We always could keep a little bit of separation. Not enough to think you won the game, but enough where that three was big. It was a really good effort by our team.”

On Breanna Lewis…
“She is tough to guard. She about fouled out all of our post players. We tried to run a lot of people at her. She is a kid that they run their stuff through. I thought our kids did a decent job. Our goal was to try and keep her around 14. She had 16, but she had to take 14 shots to get it. She takes up so much of your time and then all of a sudden they are open for a three. I thought Megan Deines was great tonight. It is a very efficient team and we had to score a lot of points. Luckily, we found our shooting touch enough to get through it.”

On Lexi Albrecht…
“Lexi is home. She has some family things to deal with and she will come back when she is ready. I think we had a little angel on our shoulder tonight with her sister. She needs to focus on her family. I really do not know when she will be back.”

Forward Meredith Burkhall
On guarding Breanna Lewis…
“Our goal was to force her baseline and make it as tough as possible.”

On preparing for a player like Breanna Lewis…
“In practice we just have to continue to work on it, go against our scout guys and do the best we can in practice to make it similar to the game.”

Guard Jadda Buckley
On finally hitting 3-pointers…
“It always feels good when the ball goes in for you. It is all about when you have the right shot, you take the shot. Coach always says shoot it before you turn it over. When you are open you have to knock them down and that is what we did today and that is huge for our team.”
