Postgame Quotes vs. KU

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“I think that sometimes in rivalry games, you get some things that are a little bit crazy. I thought tonight that both teams were pretty amped up early. I thought both teams had a lot of energy early. It just seemed like we had trouble trying to get our group to play with poise at times. When we did, we played successful. We got too sped up and then we did not play so well. They came in wanting to shoot a lot of 3’s against us and they did that and did it very well. I think our group, from a defensive standpoint, we struggled tonight. We struggled getting to their shooters and having awareness of what they were running. Those things have to get better for us, but we did a lot of good things tonight in terms of getting the ball to where we had advantages. We had advantages at the center spot and in the middle of floor. We got the ball to those areas and found some offense.”

On balanced scoring…
“I think we are in a better place offensively. Tonight our issues were turnovers. The game was played so sporadically and there were just a lot of ugly plays. Yes, we have more players that are playing well and more players that are getting themselves to better spots on the floor where they can play to their strengths.”

On the current midseason stretch…
“I have not been displeased with this group in terms of their response to adversity. If you look at the Baylor game, we got outplayed by a team that has a ton of talent. I was disappointed that we did not compete a little bit better there, but I have not been disappointed with them in terms of resolve. I think they have bounced back and come into practice to work on things. I told them in the locker room that this was a really good win. It was a rivalry game. You are going to catch them trying to play their very best. They were going to come into this game and give us everything they had. I think they threw more stuff at us tonight than they did in Lawrence, so while we did turn the ball over, we did handle some things well tonight.”

On bench support…
“We have struggled all year long trying to get that third scorer. We have kind of been going back and forth. Tonight we had more balance. It was brought up earlier – we had four tonight in double figures and another with nine points. All of those are critical, because everyone knows that it starts with Kindred Wesemann and Breanna Lewis, but we need to get more balance. I think you are seeing Kayla Goth play with more confidence, Kaylee Page with more and Bri Craig has given us a boost. [Megan] Deines was really aggressive early and ended up with a really nice night. All of those things are very good.”

Center Breanna Lewis
On her night…
“[My teammates] did a very good job of shooting and getting me the ball. I just figured that once I got the ball, I would take my time and score. Congratulations to my team on getting me the ball.”

On differences between game one and game two…
“I would say that they tried to play me different, but it was not working. They had to make some adjustments so they went back to how they played the first game, which was by fronting so I just did what I could to score.”

On beating KU…
“It feels good. It is a rivalry game. You look forward to it every year and you look forward to beating them every year. It feels good.”

Guard Megan Deines
On the early run…
“I felt like they were pressuring us, so we were just getting the ball, driving and finding [Breanna] Lewis when she was wide open. Also, coach wanted us to have a really good start to the second half so it was just about being aggressive on offense and getting stops on defense.”

On Bri Craig’s bench effort…
“Craig did a great job. She is known for being a shooter and the last couple games she has driven the ball to get and-one’s. It is always nice to have a versatile player like that that can always shoot the three but also drive it to get layups.”

On KU’s three point shooting…
“They got the ball into the middle way too much. They would get the ball in and then throw it out to hit a wide open three. The first thing we had to fix was just getting the ball out of the middle and we did okay with that.”

Sophomore Kaylee Page
On their morale…
“I feel like we are all feeling pretty good. I think we all got our confidence back after a rough stretch.”

On four players reaching double figures…
“It is so tough for the other teams to guard, because you cannot just lock up on one or two players. You really have to guard everyone on the court.”

Head Coach Brandon Schneider
Opening Statement…
“I think we had a better second half. I just did not think we played with a lot of awareness in the first half defensively. (Breanna) Lewis is a tough matchup for us. We tried to play her differently this time around than we did the first and she still had a heck of a night. I did think that we did a better job executing against the zone, especially in the second half and obviously proud of Timeka’s (O’Neal) performance, stepping up and making some shots for us tonight.”

On three point shooting…
“K-State plays a lot of zone and they are very big and they are long and it is tough sledding in the paint. You know that when you face them that the 3-point shot is going to be pretty important if you are going to be in the game.”

On Tyler Johnson…
“Tyler (Johnson) is continuing to get better. Defensively, I thought she was better. With Tyler, it is more of a stamina thing. We would like to play her more minutes but she is going to have to, conditioning wise, get there.”
